The class focuses on a student’s individual needs in difficult subject areas. Extensive practice in vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, speaking, and essential computer skills within a vocational/pre college context are provided. VALUE OF THIS COURSE: If your goal is to speak English proficiently, improve your occupational situation or begin your college career, this class will provide the extra support and instruction you will need to succeed. STUDENT MOTIVATION: An important factor in effective student learning and progress is the level of student motivation. The more determined you are to do well in this course the more likely it is that you will speak, read, write and understand English in a timely manner. Your instructor is dedicated to helping you be successful with your goals. Because of this, good effort and attendance is reinforced and required. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course deals with the fundamental subjects of the English language: pronunciation, understanding, reading, and writing and will be presented in a bi-lingual (Spanish/English) setting. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Highlighter and Index Cards Notebook paper, pencil, binder, 8 dividers STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Students will improve pronunciation, vocabulary, listening, writing and computer skills. Use a variety of computer programs and the internet as a study tool. Student will learn self-directed study skills and will be able to use a computer to access the educational resources necessary to be a successful, second language, college student. Use critical thinking processes to solve problems, understand what is being asked and apply solid test taking skills Understand how education connects to real-life situations and career goals TEACHING FORMAT Lecture, discussion, group projects, hands-on activities, problem solving, relating concepts to actual careers in the workforce and utilizing the computer as a study resource. EVALUATION DEVICES: Attendance is critical. Specific outcomes developed for hands-on and problem-solving activities are assessed by the instructor as well as the students. Quizzes, practice tests and comprehensive exams, to evaluate whether the student is progressing satisfactorily towards their personal goals. ATTENDANCE: Class attendance is important. It is imperative that the student be punctual. Active participation is essential in this class. In addition, if the student is going to be absent from class it is their responsibility to talk to the instructor beforehand. GRADING: A Grade of M – Mastery S – Satisfactory progress or U – Unsatisfactory progress will be assigned based upon attendance, homework and class participation. RECORDING: The instructor will provide students with a progress check / report in class each week. ATTENDANCE: It is difficult for a student to succeed or progress without attending classes, the time invested in the subject matter will directly correlate with the amount of time you will require to progress towards your goals. Also, if a student chooses not to attend class, call ahead or have legitimate reasons for absences then he or she can expect to receive minimal extra (make-up) assistance from the instructor. Leaving before the end of the class period unless you let me know in advance. 5.
