GROUP POWERPOINT ASSIGNMENT
Directions: In order to analyze the main elements of the novel, each group will prepare a
presentation for the class based upon a topic related to the novel.
Assignment guidelines:
 All hand-written notes will be handed in along with a print out of the presentation
 Use textural citations (chapter and page numbers) to show where you got your
information.
 Include quotations from the novel to support your ideas.
 Include appropriate graphics from ClipArt and/or the Internet.
 Include appropriate music and/or sound devices that enhance your presentation.
Assignment requirements:
 Insightful analysis of the assigned topic proven by:
o Handwritten notes of the group’s ideas.
o 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation of the group’s ideas
 Advanced use of PowerPoint tools
o Slide transitions and animations
o Graphics and sound devices
 Effective public speaking techniques, such as
o Presentation done with authority and confidence
o Clear and effective speech
o Eye contact and body language
Group 1: Focus on the symbol A and how its meaning evolves throughout the novel.
Group 2: Explain how the scaffold is a unifying device in the novel.
Group 3: Explain the changes in Roger Chillingworth’s character (physical and mental
changes) from what he once was to what he becomes. Also explain why he changes.
Group 4: Explain the changes in Hester’s character from what she once was to what she
becomes by the end of the novel. Incorporate details about why she changes.
Group 5: Do a character sketch of Pearl from child to woman. Discuss reasons for her
personality characteristics and behavior.
Group 6: Discuss the themes of sin, guilt, alienation, and expiation in reference to the
three major characters.
Group 7: What was the greatest sin committed in the novel? Of the three major
characters, who was the worst sinner? Who suffered the most? You don’t have to decide
on one specific person, but back up your reasoning with specific details and quotes.
