SBI 4U Project #1: Amazing Enzymes! Due Date: Oct. 22 Background: Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions. They have a wide variety of uses. They can be found in a multitude of products that we commonly use, can be found naturally in our bodies, and can be used for many medical and industrial purposes. Purpose: To extend your understanding of enzymes and their practical applications. Assignment: Individually or in pairs, you are to research an interesting enzyme. With your new found information, you are to put together an interactive presentation between 5-7 minutes in length OR a science fair – type display with the goal of educating your classmates on this enzyme. In your presentation/display, you should discuss/include the following: - name and a description of the chemical structure of your enzyme - where it is commonly found and/or where it was discovered - explanation of how the enzyme works - detailed discussion of its commercial uses/ applications - include lots of imagery and creativity - ensure the presentation/display is interactive Possible Enzymes to Research: Amylase Pectinase Histidase Pepsin Lactase Bromelain Aminopeptidase Alcohol Dehydrogenase Rennilase Glucanase DNA Polymerase Asparaginase Trypsin Lysozyme Lipase Chymotrypsin Peroxidase Papain Cellulase Protease These are a mere few of thousands! Take some time to research and find one that interests you. Topics will be first come first serve, starting on Monday. Evaluation: See the attached rubric. Each group will be evaluated as a whole (no individual evaluations).
