Bio 203 Anatomy and Physiology II
Writing Assignment: Disease Research
Due: November 20
Description: Student will conduct scientific literature research and write a
4-5 page paper on a human disease or disorder of personal interest and
related to their study of Anatomy and Physiology II (choose from
cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, endocrine or
reproductive systems). Topic must be APPROVED by professor BEFORE
you start writing. First student to contact professor gets that choice!
Directions:
1. Search the WWCC Electronic Data Base Collection (NOT WWW) to find at least
3 database references to use for your paper. At least 2 of the 3 references must be
no more than 2 years old. You may use additional references, such as your
textbook, as needed.
2. Download, print and staple together each reference to be used. You must turn in
copies with your paper.
3. Your paper should follow APA format for the body of the paper and for the
separate References Cited Page. Keep quotes to a minimum by making every
effort to put the thought into your own words. Remember to cite the source of
every paraphrase, fact or idea that is not your own!
4. Carefully follow and complete the Writing Assignment Cover Sheet handout
provided by your instructor. No paper will be accepted without this completed
coversheet!
5. Dr. Wilson will do a no-penalty edit of a DRAFT turned in by the DRAFT DUE
DATE. Corrected draft will be returned without a grade, giving you time to make
suggested corrections to your paper before turning it in. If you choose this option,
the draft must be turned in with your final paper!
6. Late papers loose 5 points per day late (NOT per class period late). No paper will
be accepted later than 5 days after due.
Content Guidelines:
Cover Page: Use only the handout provided to you in class. It does not count toward
your 4-5 page required length.
Introduction: Briefly introduce your topic and explain WHY the topic is important or
interesting to YOU? WHY should it be of interest or importance to the reader?
Body of Paper:
A. Cause/Effect: What is the cause of the disease or disorder and its effect
(anatomical and physiological) on the normal human body?
B. Detection/Technology:
What are some of the most current monitoring
technologies to detect or symptoms to diagnose the disease? Are there any new
advances needed or being developed in the area of detection?
C. Treatment/Therapies: Is there a cure or is the current medical approach just
treating symptoms? What are the risks and side effects associated with traditional
treatments or therapies? Discuss the risks and benefits associated with any
experimental or unconventional protocols.
D. Status: Does the medical profession have the disease or disorder under control?
If not, what is the future projection for advancements in this area? What quality
of life can a person with disease or disorder expect to have?
Conclusion: In your own words, explain your reaction to the information you learned
from your research. Do NOT just restate your discussion or facts from the paper. You
conclusion should be personal, based on what your learned while researching this paper.
References: This should be on a separate page and does not count toward the 4-5 pages
of writing required. You must use APA format for these references.
