UPCOMING EVENTS
1.
Pro Bono Kick-off Event Rescheduled
The kickoff event for the Pro Bono Partnership Project, originally scheduled for Tuesday,
September 28 at 5:30 in Lubar Commons, will be rescheduled due to President Obama's rally
in the Library Mall earlier that day. We decided to reschedule the event due to the fact that
students and attorneys would have difficulty getting to the Law School in order to attend.
We will reschedule the kickoff sometime in early October. Please check next week's
Newsletter for the new date and time. We apologize for the inconvenience.
If you have any questions, please contact Project Coordinator Henry Weiner and
hweiner@wisc.edu.
2.
October 1: Appellate Practice Workshop
Spots are open for students to participate in the Appellate Practice Workshop, put on by the
State Bar of Wisconsin, on October 1, 2010 at the UW Law School. The workshop is free
of charge for students and offers the opportunity for participants to give two oral
arguments to two different panels of judges. There are skills building sessions being given
by judges during the day on brief writing, oral advocacy and the practice before the
Wisconsin Court of Appeals. Finally, there is the opportunity to submit written materials for
comment by judges/experienced attorneys. If you are interested in participating, or would
like more information, please refer to the website at:
http://www.wisbar.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=CLE_Seminars2&Template=/Confere
nce/ConferenceDesc-ription.cfm&ConferenceID=4833
Registration is required and spots are limited, so act fast.
3.
October 6: Army JAG Brown Bag Lunch
On Wednesday October 6, from noon until 1:15 in Room 5240, a recruiter for the Army
JAG Corps (who is also one of our graduates) will host a brown bag lunch for students who
would like information about careers as a JAG officer in the Army. The recruiter, Capt.
Kristin Fricchione, will be available during that time to answer students' questions and
provide information about summer and post-graduate opportunities with the Army JAG.
No reservation is necessary -- just stop by any time between noon and 1:15 for as long as
you would like.
4.
October 7: LLM-L.I. Resume Writing Workshop
An American resume may be quite different from a resume from China or Mexico, for
example. In this resume workshop, Career Services will discuss the differences in resumes
and how to go about preparing an American resume. Whether you want to return to your
home country or practice in the United States for a bit, you should have an American
resume prepared in case a potential employer requests one. The Workshop will happen on
October 7 from 12:05 to 1:15 in Room 5246.
5.
October 8: 3Ls - Financial Planning After Graduation
On October 8 from 2:00 to 3:30 in Rm. 2260, 3Ls with student loans should plan to attend
this very informational and necessary session. The session is being offered early in the
semester because there are some regulatory changes coming up by Dec. 2010 which will
affect the payments and consolidation options for graduating 3Ls. Please see the “Events”
section of Symplicity for more information.
6.
October 8: Presentation on Entertainment Law
On Friday, October 8, at 2:30 in room 5240, Ryan Worrell (Class of 05), who completed an
LL.M. program on entertainment and media law at UCLA, has worked in a contract counsel
position at Sony Pictures Television in Los Angeles, and is now affiliated with GRB
Entertainment in L.A., will talk to students about entertainment law and "breaking into" that
field. The program will only be offered if a sufficient number of students indicate they will
attend, so please RSVP by the close of business on Wednesday, October 6, if you plan to
attend. To RSVP, go to https://law-wisc-csm.symplicity.com/students, click on the
"Events" tab, then on "Workshops," and then select the "Entertainment Law" presentation.
