Pro Bono Kick-off Event Rescheduled The kickoff event for the Pro Bono Partnership Project, originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 28 at 5:30 in Lubar Commons, will be rescheduled due to President Obama's rally in the Library Mall earlier that day. We decided to reschedule the event due to the fact that students and attorneys would have difficulty getting to the Law School in order to attend. We will reschedule the kickoff sometime in early October. Please check next week's Newsletter for the new date and time. We apologize for the inconvenience. October 1: Appellate Practice Workshop Spots are open for students to participate in the Appellate Practice Workshop, put on by the State Bar of Wisconsin, on October 1, 2010 at the UW Law School. The workshop is free of charge for students and offers the opportunity for participants to give two oral arguments to two different panels of judges. There are skills building sessions being given by judges during the day on brief writing, oral advocacy and the practice before the Wisconsin Court of Appeals. Finally, there is the opportunity to submit written materials for comment by judges/experienced attorneys. October 6: Army JAG Brown Bag Lunch On Wednesday October 6, from noon until 1:15 in Room 5240, a recruiter for the Army JAG Corps (who is also one of our graduates) will host a brown bag lunch for students who would like information about careers as a JAG officer in the Army. The recruiter, Capt. Kristin Fricchione, will be available during that time to answer students' questions and provide information about summer and post-graduate opportunities with the Army JAG. No reservation is necessary -- just stop by any time between noon and 1:15 for as long as you would like. 4. October 7: LLM-L.I. Resume Writing Workshop An American resume may be quite different from a resume from China or Mexico, for example. In this resume workshop, Career Services will discuss the differences in resumes and how to go about preparing an American resume. Whether you want to return to your home country or practice in the United States for a bit, you should have an American resume prepared in case a potential employer requests one. The Workshop will happen on October 7 from 12:05 to 1:15 in Room 5246. 5. October 8: 3Ls - Financial Planning After Graduation On October 8 from 2:00 to 3:30 in Rm. 2260, 3Ls with student loans should plan to attend this very informational and necessary session. The session is being offered early in the semester because there are some regulatory changes coming up by Dec. 2010 which will affect the payments and consolidation options for graduating 3Ls. Please see the “Events” section of Symplicity for more information. 6. October 8: Presentation on Entertainment Law On Friday, October 8, at 2:30 in room 5240, Ryan Worrell (Class of 05), who completed an LL.M. program on entertainment and media law at UCLA, has worked in a contract counsel position at Sony Pictures Television in Los Angeles, and is now affiliated with GRB Entertainment in L.A., will talk to students about entertainment law and "breaking into" that field. The program will only be offered if a sufficient number of students indicate they will attend, so please RSVP by the close of business on Wednesday, October 6, if you plan to attend. October 8: WILMIC'S Lawyering in an Electronic Age - How Technology Can Make You a Better Lawyer Take the opportunity to attend this FREE seminar to not only gather some useful information, but to network with practicing attorneys. Topics covered in the seminar will include, but are not limited to, technology tips, mobile lawyering, legal research on the internet, social media/internet marketing and networking, and electronic communication with clients. The program does NOT place students in the Madison or Milwaukee metropolitan areas. Students will earn $15/hr and will receive additional money to defray living expenses. If selected for placement, students must take the Lawyering Skills Course during the 2011 Spring semester. Professors Ralph Cagle and Gretchen Viney of the Lawyering Skills Program oversee the program. The day-to-day mentoring and supervision will be provided by the selected law firms. See the Job Bank for more information. 2Ls and 3Ls: Apply Now for Midwest Environmental Advocates' Semester Clinical Program Externship and Seminar - Spring 2011 Midwest Environmental Advocates, an independent non-profit environmental law firm, offers a unique experience for Wisconsin Law students to get an in-depth look at all aspects of environmental law practice and non-profit legal work. Founded in 1999, MEA provides legal representation and organizing assistance to community groups, local governments, and tribal governments working for clean air, clear water and environmental justice. MEA's clinical program includes two parts: a seminar and an externship. MEA's weekly seminars are intended to provide students with a varied and in-depth look at all aspects of the practice of environmental law. Seminars are taught by a combination of MEA's staff and outside experts, including some non-lawyers, who provide unique perspectives on environmental law. The externship provides students with the opportunity to gain practical working knowledge of environmental law, to participate in environmental advocacy and to hone their skills on real issues and cases. Students are involved at all levels of litigation from researching new topics in environmental protection to helping prepare briefs in ongoing litigation. MEA strives to provide students with the opportunity to see and participate in environmental law in action in court, at public hearings, and in the media. MPRE REMINDER 1. 3Ls: Register soon if you plan to take Nov. 6 MPRE Every state except Wisconsin, Washington (the State of Washington, not D.C.), and Maryland requires that you pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam in order to be admitted to practice law there. The MPRE is offered three times a year: in March, August and November. The November MPRE will be administered here at the Law School on Saturday morning, November 6. The non-refundable registration fee is $60 for people who register on or before September 28; the registration fee is $120 if you register on or before October 14, which is the latest possible registration date for the November exam. Free MPRE Review in October BarBri will be showing the MPRE Review video on October 30 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, which is one week before the exam. The video can also be watched online after October 23. Also, great news - the MPRE BarBri review is free for all students this year! Students do not need to put down a deposit of $250 in order to watch the MPRE and get the materials, which include four practice tests.
