Bio 202 Anatomy and Physiology I Writing Assignment: Disease Research Due: November 5th Description: Student will conduct scientific literature research and write a 4-5 page paper on a human disease or disorder. The disorder must be one reviewed in the Clinical Connections text and pertain to a system being studied in Anatomy and Physiology I (choose from chemistry/cells/tissues, integumentary system, skeletal system, joints, muscular system or nervous systems). Topic must be APPROVED by professor BEFORE you start writing. First student to contact professor gets that choice! Directions: 1. Search the WWCC Electronic Data Base Collection to find at least three database references to use for your paper. This will take TIME, so plan accordingly. You may use additional references, such as your textbook, medical texts, and reliable web sources (acceptable domains include .edu, .org and .gov), as needed. At least two of your references must be no more than two years old. Wikipedia and domains ending in .com or .org are NOT acceptable. 2. You must turn in stapled copies of each reference with your paper. 3. Your paper should follow APA format for the body of the paper and for the separate References Cited Page. It should include in-text parenthetical citations for every paraphrase, fact or idea that is not your own! Quotes are strongly discouraged. Plagiarism, as discussed in the syllabus, will result in an automatic ZERO for the paper and referral to the WWCC disciplinary committee as outlined in the college catalogue. 4. Carefully follow and complete the Writing Assignment Cover Sheet handout provided by your instructor. No paper will be accepted without this completed coversheet! 5. Review the grading rubric before, during and after the development of your final draft. The primary purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to assist you in the development of good writing skills. Second, to develop skills needed to use electronic resources effectively. Both are important skills for your continued success in college and in life. The goals of this project are reflected in the grading rubric, so be sure that you have met your instructors expectations. 6. Dr. Wilson will do a no-penalty edit of a DRAFT turned in by the DRAFT DUE DATE. Corrected draft will be returned without a grade, giving you time to make suggested corrections to your paper before turning it in. If you choose this option, the draft must be turned in with your final paper! 7. Late papers loose 5 points per day late (NOT per class period late). No paper will be accepted later than 5 days after due. Content Guidelines: Cover Page: Use only the handout provided to you in class. It does not count toward your 4-5 page required length. Introduction: Briefly introduce your topic and explain WHY the topic is important or interesting to YOU? WHY should it be of interest or importance to the reader? Body of Paper: The body of your paper should include discussion of the following: A. Cause of the disease, and its effect on the human body B. Detection: What are the symptoms? How is it detected and diagnosed? C. Treatment/Therapies: Is there a cure? What is the prescribed treatment? D. Current Status/Emerging Issues: Discuss some of the latest advancements and/or discoveries about the disease. What does the future hold? The body of the paper should reflect a clear understanding of these subjects written in your own words. No headings or subheadings are allowed within the body of the paper. Conclusion: In your own words, explain your reaction to the information you learned from your research. Do NOT just restate your discussion or facts from the paper. You conclusion should be personal, based on what your learned while researching this paper. References: This should be on a separate page and does not count toward the 4-5 pages of writing required. You must use APA format for these references. Your reference list should include your Clinical Connections text!
