3
To encourage recorded observation, collect and organize inspirational materials.
Engender motivation and development of ideas through the pupil’s imaginative use of
reference material and resources.
3
To equip pupils with the ability to abstract and make patterns.
2
Encourage experimentation with techniques, processes, media, scale and proportion.
2
Work in pairs to encourage discussion and analysis of work in progress, to help inspire and
refine ideas.
1
Create awareness and show the relevance of contemporary commercial design.
1
Show pattern in context as a contemporary, historical, social and cultural means of group
identification.
1
Introduce printing skills through poly block printing.
2
Organize discussions aimed at understanding the similarities and differences
in the work produced, and make comparisons with the work of artists and designers.
1
Provide an environment to encourage the voicing of critical opinions on pupils own and
others work, and to equip them with the relevant art vocabulary.
1
Intended Learning Outcomes
 Pupils will appreciate the relevance of collecting, and recording source material through
observation and use of sketch and scrap books, and recognise that the organization of these
findings provides an essential starting, and continuous reference point.
3
 Pupils will gain an understanding of pattern making through abstraction, repeat, scale and
colour work.
2
 Pupils will appreciate pattern making in context, by comparing their design process and
results with that of established designers.
1
 Creative patterns and new skills will be achieved through experimentation with tools and
techniques, leading to the use of tools and techniques in a purposeful manner.
2
 Pupils will use equipment in a safe manner.
2
 Working in pairs, pupils can share and consolidate information and refine and modify their
ideas to achieve a common goal.
1
 Acquire the appropriate vocabulary.
1
 Compare methods & techniques used by their peers, artists and designers.
1
 See pattern making as an essential part of design in the commercial world.
1
 Appreciate the social and cultural relevance of identifying with pattern.
 Become more adept at using I.T. as a tool for producing work.
2
 Be able to view their work in a commercial and cultural context. Develop analytical and
critical skills, and have confidence in their own opinions and abilities.
1
Unit Structure
 Initiate discussions on ‘team colours’ and other social groups or cultures where colour and
pattern are shared. Clans and tartans, tribes and body painting, designer labels, etc.
P.S.E. Communication
 Introduce the project; to create a football team with a creature based name, eg.The Boston
Butterflies or The Conwy Crocodiles and design the team’s new kit. Show a general pattern
resource board and further boards showing each stage of the project.
Communication. Creativity
 Pupils will work in pairs to create patterns using limited colourways for the home and away
football shirts.
Communication. P.S.E. Creativity. Problem solving. Numeracy.
 Alternatively pupils can create patterns for “footballers’ wives” designer T.shirts.
 Portrait photographs to be taken by the partner in preparation for final montage of children
wearing their own design.
I.T.









Source information from animal books supplied, and the Internet. Gain inspiration for the
name of the team from researching different creatures and noting what colours, markings,
shapes and natural patterns they can offer for the design. Discuss findings with partners,
choose a name for the team.
Communication. I.T. Literacy.
Collect resources from magazines and make drawings of all, or part of the creature.Discuss
findings and agree on the ‘team’ colours limiting them to 2 or 3. Extension work – look at
colour and imagery suitable for a club emblem. Discuss history of emblems, schools, heraldry
etc. Communication. P.S.E.
Abstract as many patterns as possible from the recorded observations and take the favoured
ones into experimental collage. Look at regular and random repeat patterns. Introduce
relevant artist’s and designer’s work : Henri Matisse’s pattern making with paper cut-outs,
Pierre Legrain’s use of animal patterns in his Art Deco ‘Zebra’chaise Longue, Darren
Medley’s Umbro football shirts, design companies:Puma and Nike etc
Problem solving. Numeracy. Communication
Discuss commercial aspects and merchandizing.
P.S.E. Communication
Create a polyprint block design and experiment with scale and repeat. Create a repeat design.
Print on various papers or fabrics.
Problem solving. Numeracy. Creativity.
Scan the portrait photograph and adjust scale to the correct size for montage. Print and apply.
Scan complete image and reduce to football card size.( If time allows introduce text)
I.T. Creativity. Numeracy.
Alternatively take the printed portrait and create a montage with a paper print.
Creativity.
Create the ‘Hall of Fame’ as a class project, collate all the ‘football cards’.
Display research work and completed pieces. The whole class reflect on and discuss the
design process and critically appraise the body of work.
Communication. P.S.E.
Further Extension Work

to describe each one.

 Design a hat and scarf to co-ordinate with your design work.
 Design a poster
 Complete a written summary.
Activities
 Observational drawing and colour work.
 Photography.
 Collage and montage.
 Polystyrene block printing of random and regular repeats onto paper and fabric.
