Supplemental Budget Amanda Subler Ed 417 Dr. Helms January 29, 2002 Amanda Subler Ed 417 Budget The following materials are items that will be beneficial to me as a social studies teacher. I am suggesting that these materials be used in the primary grades in elementary. Videos Tapes 1. Maps: Symbols and Terms and Globes and US. (Complete set $95.00) This set is a great base for teaching beginning geography. It begins with symbols found on maps and communities, railroads, colleges, and highways. It also covers the different types of maps, keys, and legends. The video on globes provides scale, directions, latitude and longitude, time zones, and climate zones. Both videos are great for primary level students. 2. American Cultures for Children Videos Series (Complete set of 12videos for $359.40) This a great set for helping younger children learn about the many diverse cultures in our world. These videos offer segments on geography, history, language instruction, crafts, and songs. There are kid-hosted segments that allow students to learn from a different perspective. 3. Families of the World Series (Complete set of 10 videos for $285.00) This series will give children an intriguing taste of another culture and allow them to compare and contrast it with their own. It takes children though a day in the life of children and families from other cultures. Some of the children speak English and narrate for those who do not speak English. It allows students to see how families meet basic needs and their living styles. It also helps teach geography, economics, and history as well. 4. American History for Children Video Series (Complete set of 12 video for $359.40) This is an educational series that was created by teachers and TV programming experts. This series looks at historical events, documents and symbols, holidays, national leaders, and the contributions of Americans from diverse backgrounds. These videos are great for grades k-5. Enrichment Books 1. American Symbols: True Books (Complete set of 5 books $33.00) Exploring the origin and meaning of America’s national symbols for young readers. These books are easy-to- read, large print, bright colors, and vivid pictures that help illustrate the lessons. These books are great for grades 2 –4. 2. Our community (CD-ROM $18.95) This is a kid-friendly set that takes students around the neighborhood to show the work being done at seven familiar sites. These books explain why each place is important, what people work there, what those people do, and how it helps the community. Computer Programs 1. My first amazing world explorer (CD-ROM $18.95) This CD-ROM puts users in a virtual bedroom where they can access an A to Z country finder, an interactive world map, and basic information about countries and continents, capital cities, famous places, bodies of water, and natural wonders. There are many on screen activities that allow students to acquaint themselves with the world of geography. 2. Road Adventures USA: School Edition (Set contains 6 sets of 2 CD-ROMS $154.95) A simulated road trip with live-action video, animation, documents, and maps tests students’ skill in math, reading comprehension, critical thinking, geography, and map reading. Students will engage in a quest to one of nine destinations while enroute students will experience such obstacles as speeding tickets, construction and many others. The students will have to budget the money they have throughout the trip. This program is great for grades 4 and up. Games 1. U.S. Bingo ($24.99) A simple entertaining game for U.S. geography drill. The game can be played four ways: by states, capitals, abbreviations, or by neighboring states. The game includes 32 player cards and 50 call cards. Great game for students to enjoy and learn at the same time. 2. Mad Dash! ($13.95) Blaze a trail across the U.S. with this rousing award-winning geography game, which reinforces state locations with each shuffle of the cards. Students have only three minutes to forge a coast-to-coast path by drawing cards of states, which border on each other. For 2 to 4 players and for grades 3 and up. Supplemental Books 1. Unites States Atlas for Young people ($9.95) Each two-page spread contains a full-page map facing informative text and color photographs detailing the state’s diversity’s and spirit. Great for grades 3 –7 filled with over 128 colorful pages. 2. Folk Tale Plays’ Round the World ($15.00) Introducing students to the best-known and best loved folklore of the world, this collection of 16 short, royalty-free plays offers tales from China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Scotland, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. Includes author’s notes and production notes for each play. Great for grades 4-8. Learning Activities 1. U.S. Relief Map ($32.00) Providing accurate representations of elevations and landforms of all 50 states, this three-dimensional wall map combines a color-keyed physical map with such political and land use features as state lines, railroads, cities, and reservoirs. 2. Map Skills: Bulletin Board Set (Contains 4 posters $7.95) With simple sentences and bright colors, posters introduce types of maps, latitude and longitude, coordinates and indexes, and direction, scale, and distance.
