Research Activity: Research Questions and Note Cards
Choose a god or goddess from the chart above to research.
For the god or goddess that you choose, you will need to research THREE questions that you write yourself based on these possible topics:
1 What is (s)he the god or goddess of?
2
3
Are there any words that are derived from your deity?
Who are the parents of the deity?
4 Who are the children of the deity?
5 Tell the story behind the god or goddess.
Look up answers to your THREE research questions and write summaries of the reading you do for them. o Use at least ONE print source, like a book or encyclopedia in our school library. o Use at least ONE on-line source, like a website or an ebscohost article.
Internet sources must be from respected sources, with addresses ending in .edu or similar, or be from a non-wiki site. While Wikipedia is a good starting place for research, it is not where you will find the most credible and verifiable answers.
Write a source card for each source with the citation correctly written down.
Write two or three note (summary) cards for the information that you find in each source.

Writing Activity: Report of Information with Citations and Works Cited Page
Write a two-paragraph report about your deity. Answer all three of your research questions in the report.
Write using MLA formatting. For information you use that is from your note cards, write parenthetical citations in the correct manner. Don’t forget 2.0 line spacing and all the other things you learned on the last essay!
Create a document on your Google drive account. Title it: Name of God:Your Name. For example, my document might be called Hera:Tollison.
Create a works cited page using bibme.org. I will give instructions on how to do this. Copy and paste the works cited page as the last page of your document.
III.
Collaboration Activity: Create a group poster and present to the class.
I will assign your groups. You and your group will create a poster and present it to the class. It will include the following:
A large image of the deity or a symbol that represents him/her.
Each person’s printed report and works cited page, condensed to fit on the poster.
A large title with the deity’s name on it.
When you present, each group member will speak about their portion of the project. Individual grades will be given for speaking, and an ESLR grade will be given for collaboration and participation.

8. Places to do your research:
SMHS Library
Local Community or University Library
On-line EbscoHost
Online Websites (search engine like Google, Bing, or Yahoo) look for .edu, or a well-known public television site, or even a .gov cite.
9. bibme.org is a great resource for creating works cited pages. You simply follow the prompts to create bibliographic entries that you can copy by hand, copy using copy-paste on a computer, or print out if you make an account. I will show you in class how to create your works cited page using this resource.
.com sites might be good or bad, depending on who created them. Pay attention to clues in the written material that show you what biases or false information might be given.
Places to avoid research/possible pitfalls:
Never use Wikipedia in your citations. Do use it to get a general overview of a topic, or to find other sources in the references section.

Source Cards and Note Cards
Source Cards
Bibliography or source cards have three purposes:
1. To record all the information needed to find the reference in the library.
2. To record the information needed for the parenthetical citations for the paper.
3. To record the information needed to prepare the final Works Cited for the final paper.
SAMPLE SOURCE CARD:
Ellison, Ralph
Shadow and Act.
New York: Random House, 1964.
Print.
1 Be sure to number your sources in the right hand corner of the card. This will save you a great deal of time when you are writing the information on your note cards.

Taking notes is a very important step in researching. You must record enough information and details, but not completely “lift” material. You must decide when it is best to use direct quotes and when it is best to paraphrase. Never copy something word for word unless you’re quoting something. And remember … whenever you use someone else’s idea (anything you didn’t already know) you must use a citation! Failure to do this is called plagiarism and is illegal.
Note cards are very useful tools if used properly. Use the following format for your note cards. Be sure to include all of the necessary information.
Topic: A word or phrase stating what that card is
Note Card Sample: about.
Source #: Using your source cards, write which
Topic: junk food Page # Source #
44 3
Note:
Junk food “gives you quick energy, but it also gives you a quick letdown” source this is from. You may number them for now but by the time you type your final copy, they will not be numbered, just in alphabetical order.
Personal Comment: Might be a good quote for the conclusion.
Page #: What page you found the information on.
Note: Here is the note itself. If it is a direct quote, be sure to put quotation marks around it.
Otherwise PARAPHRASE!
Personal Comment: This is optional. It may be a reminder of where you want to put this in your paper or that it is extra info.
