1. Complete a character chart or tree. I have given you some characters on the bulletin board.
You must add 2 more characters that you feel are important in the novel. You must fill in the
chart about each character’s appearance, background, and major actions.
2. Write ¾ of a page explaining the title of the novel. What does the title, Breathing Underwater
mean? What is happening in the novel when the author mentions the title? Does the title
mean the same thing throughout the novel?
3. Write a poem about Nick’s feelings toward Caitlin and his regret for what he did to her. The
poem must be at least 12 lines.
4. Define fear according to Nick. The paper must be at least 1 page or 800 words. Use one of
the following prompts. Give specific examples, quote from book cited to support your ideas.
(Flinn 82)- this is correct citing after the quote.
 Fear of his father.
 Fear of himself.
 Fear of losing Caitlin.
 Fear of being alone.
 Fear of losing control.
 Fear (or lack of) death.
5. Write an epilogue—3/4 of a page. An epilogue tells the reader what happens to the characters
AFTER the story.
6. Draw a portrait of one of the characters from the novel. You MUST use color.
7. Choose 5 songs (with clean lyrics) that fit well with the novel. For each song (in 4-5
sentences) write the name of the song, the significance of each song, and when in the novel
the song would fit the mood. Extra Credit will be given for a presentation of your songs and
what you have written about each song.
