Old St Luke’s Church ~Benns Church Blvd~ Cemetery
Transcribed by members of the
Grave Site Survey Task Force (GSSTF)
Under the Auspices of
Isle of Wight County Historical Society (IWCHS)
Visited Intermittently from 2004 - 2005
Revised July 12, 2006
In order to provide some semblance of tombstone locations in the somewhat sprawling cemetery, a sketch of the cemetery was
annotated with the somewhat arbitrary layout sections to provide continuity in the transcribing process … these sections are identified
in the attached sketch.
Historic St. Luke's Church, c. 1632, affectionately known as "the Old Brick", is the "Oldest surviving church of English foundation in
America" and the only original Gothic church in the USA. Originally an Anglican church, after the Revolutionary War it was
consecrated Episcopal. British Soldiers and Confederates camped under our great oaks. Historic St. Luke's Church is a non-profit
foundation; Historic St. Luke's Restoration, Inc. St. Luke's is a National Historic Landmark and Historic Shrine.
Any text within the “[ ]” is a comment about the tombstone inscription, ex., [fs] indicates a footstone inscription. Throughout the
transcribing process, an attempt was made to preserve the, ‘look and feel’ of the original inscriptions as regards word spacing,
arrangement, and possible misspellings.

That I no more thy graceful form shall see;

That of thy woman’s heart so truly told
Shall thy sweet voice no more salute my ears.

A kind and devoted husband
lies beneath the sod. The ten-der solicitude of a loving wife
failed to restore him to health.
While she anxiously sought to
alleviate his intense sufferings
May she be able to say
Thy will be done
Rest for the toiling hand
‘Rest for the anxious brow,
Rest for the weary way, sore feet
Rest from all labor now.

(5) The last name, “BUNKLEY” while not inscribed, is implied.
(6) The relationship is not visible but the deceased is obviously an infant daughter.
(7) The middle initial “M” has been partially obliterated (intentionally?), possibly an error in the engraving process.
(8) Modern word processing software programs do not lend themselves to reproducing the authentic Old English style of
letters and numbers. Hence, a photograph of the actual tombstone inscription is included so that the reader can appreciate
the actual inscription in its entirety . . .
