Textbook: DeVeaux, Velleman, and Bock, Intro Stats 2 nd Ed.
Course Objectives: This course is designed as a practical introduction to statistical methods
including basic data analysis and inference. Topics will include distributions, correlation, regression,
inference and hypothesis testing.
Class Policies: Attendance at every class is important. Please be prompt as tardiness is a disruption
to the rest of your classmates. Most of your assignments and exams will be completed utilizing
Western’s WebCT Vista platform online, so you must have an account. Discussions will be posted on
Vista as well. LATE HOMEWORKS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED! Missing homework will count as “zero”.
There will be 3 tests and a final. There will be absolutely NO make-up exams or ‘extra credit’.
Separate guidelines will be handed out explaining the details of the Project, with due dates
assigned. Your final grade will be based on the following:

*Discussions are posted on our class WebCT-Vista site. Details on how to access this will be
discussed in class.
*Homework includes several small-group assignments that will be distributed in class at the
appropriate time. All other homework will be completed using the Vista website.
Note: While the concepts in this course are not complicated, they do require a basic familiarity and
understanding of algebra. Successful completion of this course is highly correlated with completing
your homework assignments in a timely manner. (Cramming does not work!)
Technology: You will be expected to use Minitab™ and/or a calculator for much of the work in this
class. Minitab™ is available on all computers on campus. We will use version 15. You can also rent
or purchase Minitab™ through www.e-Academy.com. You can rent for 6 months ($29.99), 12 months
($49.99), or purchase a perpetual version ($99.99). I use a TI-83plus calculator.
