Lesson Plan Spanish American War Causes and Effects

Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, students should be able to do the following:

1.

Understand the causes of the Spanish American War.

2.

Understand the effects of the Spanish American War.

3.

Identify and understand the types of propaganda used before and during the Spanish

American War.

4.

Identify the principal participants.

Anticipatory Set:

 Project the overview section of the Spanish American War onto screen for whole class viewing or allow each student to visit the websites individually.

Technology Used:

 PowerPoint

 Wiki Page

 Wordle website

 Google documents

 Glogster Website

 Video

Activities:

1.

Form pairs of students from among your class.

2.

Students will review the Web links listed on the Spanish American War Links document. (Divide the groups according to the web links related to the class curriculum).

3.

Students will perform a “Think – Pair – Share” activity by doing the following:

They will review the information on each web site and discuss the information provided individually. The pair will create a report using Google documents,

Glogster Website, and PowerPoint which will discuss main ideas and content.

They will share their reports and PowerPoint with the class discussing either the causes of the war (from the Website material) or the effects of the war (from the

Website material). They will post their presentation on a website or Wiki Page set up by the Teacher. Students will share comments in a discussion forum about these papers on the website.

4.

Students will create a PowerPoint/Poster/Video using the Wordle website and

Glogster Website as part of the presentation. The presentation will be a Point of

View paper telling the effect each principal participant had on the causation or effect of the war. They will present these to the class and then post on the website or Wiki Page set up by the Teacher. Students will share in a discussion forum comments questions about posts on the website.

Students will complete Political Cartoon Lesson before they do number 6

Students will create a poster/ PowerPoint/Political Cartoon/Video and a Gloster identifying the cause and its related type of propaganda (example: Yellow

Journalism – Sensationalism). They will present these to the class and then post on the website or Wiki Page set up by the Teacher. Students will share will share in a discussion forum comments questions about posts on the website

Closure:

 Teacher will check the website or Wiki Page and check on the discussion about each of these projects and participate if necessary.

 Teacher led discussion on the causes and effects of the war.

 Teacher led discussion on principal participants of the war.

 Teacher led discussion on types of propaganda and their uses today.
