Course Description:
This course contains content about leadership and management as it pertains to the professional
nurse. Students will review issues related to leadership and management and utilize critical thinking to
make leadership decisions. Clinical hours will be derived from the student working along side practicing
nurse role-models. Each student will be assigned a preceptor with whom to work. The student will work
the preceptor’s schedule for a total of 15 clinical hours.
Course Objectives:
1. Compare and contrast leadership and management roles and responsibilities.
2. Analyze roles and functions of a nurse manager, their relationship with others and their
management & distribution of resources.
3. Evaluate the nurse manager’s role in selecting, developing and evaluating staff.
4. Identify and compare characteristics that are used to differentiate healthcare organizations,
their characteristics and their designs and the concept of power and how it relates to
leadership.
5. Describe key concepts related to problem-solving and decision-making and how these concepts
are essential skills for critical thinking.
6. Evaluate team building concepts through communication and partnerships.
7. Explore conflict resolution and the nurse leader’s role in determining the nature of a particular
issue, choosing the most appropriate approach, and implementing a course of action to resolve
conflict.

9. Evaluate the importance of research in the development of the scientific basis for nursing
practice and explore practical strategies for translating research into practice.

11.Community Service Project will be assigned during the semester. This will be a 4-8 hour project.

Students will participate in 30 hours of leadership /management clinical.
Fifteen (15) hours will be spent with a RN in delivering care to a full team of patients.
Fifteen (15) hours will be spent in shadowing an RN in a management role.
The RNs in these leadership and management roles will serve as preceptors, which mean they
will supervise the student. An instructor may be in the facility, but the preceptor will have
direct oversight of the student.
5. Medical sites will vary throughout the rotation.
6. This is a very limited clinical experience so attendance and punctuality is very important. Your
preceptor, along with an instructor, will be evaluating your performance.
7. The students may submit the name of a nurse manager, facility or type of management position
they would prefer for the 30 hour experience.
8. All missed clinical time must be made up! Arrangements for makeup time will be made by the
student with their preceptor with final approval of the instructor.
9. If a student is employed in a facility, it will be permissible to shadow a nurse manager who is
their direct supervisor.
10.If extenuating circumstances prevail so that a student is unable to attend or will be late, the
student must contact the assigned clinical instructor and preceptor in advance. Failure to notify
the clinical instructor and preceptor will result in a failure for the clinical day.
11.Refer to Student Handbook regarding student responsibilities and expectations in the Clinical
area as related to dress code, smoking, use of cell phones, etc.
Teaching strategies:
The instructor will use teaching strategies that include lecture and discussion, interactive
group activities, written assignments, multi-media presentations, textbook and study guide
assignments, quizzes and examinations, as well as guest speakers and outside projects.

Attendance:
Refer to the student handbook for attendance policy. Attendance at lecture and clinical is
required. Make-up opportunities will be at the instructor’s discretion. Clinical make-up fees may be
charged per college policy. Late assignments may be assessed as a 10% reduction in grade, and will not
be accepted after a due date agreed upon by the instructor and student.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism is defined as taking someone else’s work and presenting it as your own. Plagiarism will
result in a failing grade for the assignment and may result in dismissal from the class with subsequent
failure of the course.
Conduct:
Student conduct expectations are listed in the college handbook. Students will be required to
adhere to those listed expectations and the ones listed below:
1. Insubordination to school officials, instructors or staff (including personnel at clinical sites) is
not allowed, and can result in expulsion from the professional nursing program.
2. Students are expected to conduct themselves as adult learners in a college setting. Disruptive
behavior, such as talking or leaving and re-entering the room excessively will not be tolerated. If
you disrupt the class, you will be asked to leave and 10 points will be deducted from your overall
grade.
3. During test, do not leave the room unless with permission of the instructor. Failure to abide by this
will result in a 0 (zero) for the exam/quiz. Cell phones must by kept out of sight and on vibrate.
4. NO CELL PHONE USE during class time. Please place your cell phone on silence and use it only at
breaks or at lunch.
Library/Computer:
Computers may be used for school assignments only. Students have free access to LIRN, a
computer-based library reference system. Written materials are available for check out in the library.
The college provides an e-mail account for each student’s use. All announcements and official
business will be issued with this e-mail address. Students must adhere to Bolivar Technical College
Computer usage policy.
