SF PROMISE MENTOR PROGRAM MENTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION The Success Through Opportunity Motivation and Promise (STOMP), Mentor Program at San Francisco State University aims to help empower youth to make positive life choices through relevant and interactive activities that enable them to maximize their personal and academic potential. The Mentor will provide general guidance, support, and encouragement through one-on-one and group mentoring sessions of 10 – 15 hours per week for a period of at least ten months. The mentor will be matched with a group of mentees, age 11-14, who are at the ‘brink of success’, in order to reduce isolation and prevent at risk behaviors, such as: juvenile delinquency and gang participation. We want to improve academic performance; and reduce the dropout rate in the target area. The Mentor/Tutor will communicate, share ideas and concerns with program coordinator. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Meet with mentees for a minimum of 8 hours per week at either the target middle school or other designated site Agree to meet with assigned mentees for a minimum of six months Provide general guidance, encouragement, and support to promote personal and social responsibility in mentees Provide academic assistance with homework and school projects as needed Provide in class support to mentees and teaching staff Be dependable and consistent with mentoring sessions Maintain and submit accurate Mentoring Contact Logs to document progress of assigned mentee Attend all essential orientations and training sessions scheduled by the Project Coordinator Maintain Mentee’s information confidential, except for information shared with the Project Coordinator, teachers, and/or parents which the youth has agreed to share Promote a college/career going culture with mentee Maintain a professional attitude and conduct in the assigned mentoring relationship Attend mentor/mentee group outings and recognition events whenever possible Prepare mentees for rigors of High School especially the “A-G Requirements” Mentor will be resource for school sites regarding careers, general college admissions and financial aid Maintain good academic standing at SF State! REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS OF THE VOLUNTEER MENTOR PROGRAM The Mentor must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a college student in good academic standing, have the ability to care about youth in a nonjudgmental manner and ability to accept youth as they are. Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively with others; Knowledge of the educational and psychological issues affecting youth and nbilingual is a PLUS. Livescan background will be conducted.
