HINDUISM, BUDDHISM, AND CONFUCIANISM Copyright 2007 By Mason Emerson The aum symbol is used in a Hindu chant; courtesy of wikipedia.org Hinduism began in India where it still dominates. It is the third largest major religion in the world, and it is very old as it began before Buddhism, Christianity, Islam etc. It teaches that when a person dies, because of wrongs done (bad Karma), the person’s soul experiences reincarnation (samsara) meaning goes to live again in some other form such as an insect or flower. This repeats until by right living the person is liberated from activity in this universe (moksa) realizing that s/he is united with God since everything here is God, and the idea of separate existence is an illusion. Yoga and meditation are techniques used to empty the mind so as to approach God. Hindus believe there is only one God, Brahman, but Hindus are also free to focus worship on any of His different forms such as Shiva the god of light and destruction. Images are not idols in the sense of being recipients of worship, but are handy focus points for the various forms of Brahman, all worship given before them passing on to Brahman. Shiva’s wife Kali is goddess of power, sickness and death. Hindus seek truth, light and immortality. Confucius – wikipedia.org Confucianism began in ancient China. Some say it is really more a code of moral or behavorial beliefs than a religion, but it is very influential, especially among Chinese including the many now in all nations earthwide. Confucianism offers ways for followers to behave in harmony with others such as parents, members of government and national rulers. It has a lot of rituals, not actual formal worship or meditation. The Chinese founder Confucius, born about 550 years before Christ, sometimes spoke of supernatural beings in ways that sound agnostic. A Confucianist can, for example, also be a Taoist, Christian, Muslim, Shintoist or Buddhist. It may include, but need not include features and beliefs that go back before it to before its founder Confucius. For example some Confucianists believe in ancestor worship, sacrifice to ancestral spirits and an abstract God in heaven, and there is deification of ancient kings and Confucius himself. It teaches people to be humane, and it puts a strong positive emphasis on education and learning. Statue of Buddha; courtesy of wikipedia.org Buddhism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. It spread from India to Central Asia, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Southeast and East Asian nations such as China, Korea, and Japan. There are about 360 million followers. It tries to end the suffering of cyclic existence or samsara by guiding followers to liberation from this material universe. Followers must purify and train their minds then obey laws of karma which say for example that if we act badly then we will have a negative consequence if not now then after death when transformed into another being such as an insect. Buddhism says to not harm others and to do things moderately. It does not deny supernatural beings exist and many are noted in Buddhist scriptures, but it also does not teach that they were sources of creation, can save us from death, or judge us. Buddhists do believe they can affect world events, and some Buddhists use rituals to associate with the supernatural. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Four_Heavenly_Messengers.jpg HINDUISM-BUDDHISM-CONFUSCISM WORDFIND Hinduism, Buddhism, Karma, reincarnation, samsara, liberated, moksa, illusion, yoga and meditation, Brahman, Shiva, wife Kali, immortality, Confucianism, code of moral beliefs, Confucius, supernatural, agnostic, Taoist, Muslim, Shintoist, Siddhartha Gautama, Sri Lanka, Korea, Japan V S M M Z N C V B H Y G L K M M A L M I A E I Z O E J T W A O O S S M A H O D M D L L I H T R R Q P I I R N M Q R T S I S X T U E L C P N H A K V S H A E A T U T A C O D E A D K A V R I F L A R A M D N N G A I D E W B I S U S P N A T F O R L U C U F U R H K K D R N K U I X E A N U B I X A L O X E N P C S F O F R C F I W L H M E P D U I U O V I N Y D N F B I M L U Y G U L H S H I V A V O I U B A S D Z S L A G N O S T I C C U E E N Q S B I T S I O T N I H S I T F R I M M O R T A L I T Y N A P A J J A A M A T U A G A H T R A H D D I S T D G I U B D T S I O A T Q A L L R E X V O O P M Z Q Z B N H H A N H R D S W N Y J V F N H K T L K F V D T T HINDUISM-BUDDHISM-CONFUSCISM DECODER Copyright 2007.
