Job Description

As a Support Professional in our Vocational Program you would be expected to support individuals to do the following to the best of their ability:

~ Transportation : Provide transportation to and from places they chose to go.

~Involvement: Be involved in completing paper work, attending meetings, being on time for meetings and to job sites.

~ Job Coach : You have the responsibility to assist, train and mentor people with learn a new job skill or maintaining an old skill. You will need to build a relationship with the employer and assist the person served to build a relationship with them also. You will assist with communicating when they need days off for vacation and/or sick leave and adjust their schedule to work with the employer.

~ Healthcare : Helping the person receive education about the Healthcare services available and who will be providing them so that the person can make an educated decision. Making sure they have the time off from work and they have transportation to and from their appointment. Sometimes we need to assist other team members with getting meds and extra clothes ready the appointments.

~ Communication: Our jobs require that we adapt to different communication needs.

Some people speak, some people sign, some have communication devices, some people display nonverbal communication, and others use a combination of communication techniques. The key thing in our jobs and in life is to remember that all behavior is a form of communication. Remember that sometimes people may say one thing; however, they truly mean something else. For example if someone always says they want to go to

McDonald’s they may not really want to go to McDonald’s. They may be saying that they want to go to McDonald’s because this is their way of saying they want to go out to eat. We have to be creative in how we communicate whether it is showing someone different pictures to allow them to make choices or whether it is taking someone for a drive to show them different places they could choose to go ~ BE CREATIVE.

~ Program Books : Each person has a program book. Our job is to follow the plan that you as a team member will be a part of creating. This book will have areas that require documentation on a daily basis. We are responsible for educating the person what is in their books. They can look at their books any time they want to. They have three books at the administration office (blue book = history, red book = medical and black book = programs).

~ Finances : People are on a wide range of levels of understanding when it comes to their finances. It is our job to understand what level of assistance each of the people we work with need and what do we need to teach them to be more independent in the area of finances. Finances include making sure they have receipts and it’s been wrote in the check book register. Vocational staff does help with some shopping, hair appointments, lunch dates and other commitments they may have.

~ Laundry : We are responsible for getting soiled clothes returned to the residential program to be washed. When returning soiled clothes make sure they are placed in a plastic bag when returning them.

~ Team Player : We are part of a team that is looking to help teach someone to be able to make choices so that they are able to live their own life. A real life means that they do

their own vacation and sick leave request, get to work on their own, communicate with their employer, that they become involved in the community and with their job (if they choose). Now that doesn’t mean each person is going to be able to do each of these task completely, but means that we have areas of opportunity to teach people to lead their lives to the best of their ability. Being a member of a team means that if you are struggling with a situation then you need to involve other team members to help you through the situation or request a Special Team Meeting. Being a team member also means getting paper work in on time, following through with the TEAM’S decision with the plan that is wrote. The biggest thing to remember is that there is no “I” in TEAM.

~ Staff Member: Here in the vocational area we help each other out, what this means your will learn and understand all the jobs and what is expected of you. You will be able to fill in, in any area in the vocational program.

Demonstrate the ability to listen, generate creative ideas, and the willingness to

explore opportunities in the local community.
