The Swedish King Karl XII moved with his army against Poltava. In April 1709 his army of 25000 soldiers besieged Poltava. End of June 1709 40000 Russian soldiers arrived. 28th June 1709 was “The Battle of Poltava”. 6,900 Swedish soldiers were killed. 2,760 Swedish soldiers were taken prisoner. After the battle the Swedish army retired to Perovolotjno. This was next to the river Dneper. During the night to July 1, King Karl and a few thousand soldiers crossed the river and headed for Bender in Turkey. There he stayed until 1913, when he was taken as prisoner. During the day of July 1, parts of the Russian army approached Perovolotjno. 16,000 Swedish soldiers were taken prisoners. A whole army ceased to exist. This was a tremendous blow to Sweden. Bessarabia between Poltava (Ukraine) and Bender (Turkey) It’s possible that Swedish soldier named Grufman/Gruvman have been left by or just escaped in the area Poltava – Ukraine – Bessarabia – Bender.
