Daryl L. Williams, Senior Pastor, is located in Oxon Hill, Maryland and has been a SHARE site for about 13 years. SHARE began as a part of the church’s outreach ministry and, under the dedicated leadership of coordinator Shirley Smith, continues to flourish at St. Paul today. The SHARE Ministry at St. Paul consists of a group of 20 dedicated volunteers who are willing to work on the various teams, such as transportation, communi- Silver Anniversary cations, volunteer service, distribution, and registration so that every SHARE collection and distribution run smoothly from start to finish. In addition to a well-structured God-centered team, two aspects of SHARE at St. Paul really stand out: the spirit of ministry and the desire to build relationships with individuals and the community. According to coordinator, Shirley Smith, SHARE is much more than a bag of food. First, SHARE staff sends a very big thank you to all of you for everything that you do to make healthy food an affordable option for people in your communities. Second, several of you have been asking SHARE staff members some really great questions lately. In the newsletter, we will highlight one question per month so that you can see what other host sites are asking and learn more about the ins and outs of SHARE. To submit a question, please call us at (301) 864-3115. REDEEMED TEMPLE OF JESUS CHRIST 24 MICHIGAN PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH 24 PEOPLES CONGREGATIONAL UCC 23 REDEEMING LOVE CHRISTIAN CENTER 23 Question of the Month: “I want to partner with other organizations in my area, but I don’t know where to begin. What’s a good way to start a partnership?” FIRST BAPTIST- HIGHLAND PARK 20 THE NEW MACEDONIA BAPTIST CHURCH 16 Partnering with churches and organizations in your area is a great outreach strategy for a number of reasons. A partnership allows you to make affordable and healthy SHARE food available to people who need it but who may not be familiar with your site. Building relationships with other groups in your community strengthens the impact that SHARE can have on families in the area. Increasing the number of packages that your site distributes each month certainly helps the community, but there are some perks for your site, too. If your site orders 60 Value Packages or more per month, our warehouse staff will count and pack your order before you come to the warehouse on Distribution Day, meaning that you’ll get to skip the line and save time. And, for every 75 Value Packages that your site orders, you will receive a free Value Package. EPIPHANY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 13 EMMANUEL AME CHURCH 12 While partnerships are important both for the community and for your site, they can sometimes be intimidating to begin. Providing information about SHARE to local churches, apartment complexes, and senior buildings can be an easy place to start. You can always request extra SHARE newsletters, calendars, and flyers so that you have something to share with potential partners. Another good step is to invite representatives from local organizations to your site for an informational meeting about SHARE. The more people who know about and get involved with SHARE, the healthier and stronger our communities will be. SHARE staff is here for you, and we are more than happy to work with you to develop partnerships for your site. Give us a call at 301-864-3115. We are looking forward to hearing from you! Through the relationships that customer had made at SHARE, they were connected to someone who had a washer and dryer available. Another customer, a member of the Oxon Hill community, heard about SHARE and purchased SHARE packages at St. Paul over a period of time. When the customer became ill and was no longer purchasing SHARE, Ms. Smith visited her and continued to build a relationship with her. In the end, the customer’s funeral took place at St. Paul United Methodist because her ties with the SHARE community at the church were so strong. True, SHARE provides healthy food at a reasonable price, which is a good service for every community. What makes SHARE great, however, is the way it creates space for relationships to grow and for communities to become stronger. As Ms. Smith said, “the food is a good way to begin a connection with our brothers and sisters.” In addition to the spirit of ministry that is present in SHARE at St. Paul, this site also stands out because of its commitment to creating organizational partnerships within the community to reach more people. Helping Hands of Oxon Hill, led by Earl Brown, partners with St. Paul by purchasing packages through the site. St. Paul has also created a partnership with St. Columba Catholic Church, a local parish with Spanish-speaking members. By building relationships with other organizations, St. Paul United Methodist has created a way to make healthy food an affordable reality for people in Oxon Hill who might not be familiar with St. Paul itself. Through a connection at the Life Skills Center of St. Paul UMC, coordinator Shirley Smith plans to approach a local elementary school with the idea of a partnership as a way for local students and their families to access healthy food without breaking their grocery budget. Although St. Paul has had quite a few successful partnerships, they are always looking to team up with more organizations to promote healthier families and a stronger Oxon Hill community. If you are interested in forming a partnership with St. Paul United Methodist, please call Shirley Smith at 301-567-4433. SHARE staff would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to the SHARE coordinator and team at St. Paul United Church in Oxon Hill, MD for everything that you do to make SHARE a meaningful (and delicious!) program for people in your area. You are the reason that SHARE works, and we truly appreciate everything that you do! Myth vs. Reality SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is the new name for the Food Stamp program. Even though it has a new name, there are many long-standing myths about this program. Myth: People use food stamps to buy lavish foods and expensive treats. Fact: The average food stamp benefit comes out to be less than $1.50 per person per meal. Myth: Food stamps are for lazy people who don’t work. Fact: While people who are unemployed can still qualify for food stamps, over half of SNAP recipients who are able to work have jobs. Myth: If I receive SNAP benefits, my children will have to repay a debt to the government. Fact: Receiving SNAP benefits has no financial impact whatsoever on your children. Myth: Receiving SNAP benefits will affect my applications for citizenship or permanent residency in the future. Fact: Food stamp benefits are not taken into account on applications for citizenship or permanent residency. Myth: People will make judgments about me when they see me using food stamps at the store. Fact: SNAP benefits are linked to an EBT card, which looks like a credit card. No one will be able to tell if you are using SNAP benefits or a bank card. To learn more about SNAP, or if you would like assistance with your application, feel free to contact any of the following locations: Life Skills Center at St. Paul 6634 St. Barnabas Rd. In honor of 25 years of service to the community, we have compiled a list of 25 ways to lead a healthy life. Choose two or three of these suggestions and stick with them for the month. We can all take small steps to promote healthier families and stronger communities! 1. Whole grains are a good option. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, rye bread, brown rice, popcorn, oatmeal and whole-grain cereal. 2. Help your children develop healthy habits early in life that will bring lifelong benefits. Be a good role model, make it fun, and involve the whole family in lifestyle changes. 3. Chicken, fish and beans are good choices for protein. Remove skin and visible fat from poultry. If you do eat red meat, limit it to once in a while, keep portion size small and choose the leanest cuts. 4. Read food labels Pick healthy foods that provide nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber but limit sodium, added sugars, saturated fat and trans fat. 5. When you cook at home you have more control over ingredients and portion sizes, so aim to cook at home more often than eating out. Get great recipes and tips at heart.org/simplecooking. 6. For snack time, keep fresh fruit and pre-chopped or no-chop veggies on hand. Your family is more likely to grab fruits and vegetables over other items if they’re readily available. 7. Enjoy fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, trout and albacore tuna are good choices. 8. A small handful of nuts or seeds can be a satisfying and healthy snack. Look for unsalted or lightly salted nuts. Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts are all good choices. 9. Vegetables and fruits are loaded with nutrients and fiber, and typically low in calories and sodium. Fresh, frozen or canned produce can all be healthy choices, but compare food labels and choose wisely. 10.Use fresh or dried herbs and spices or a salt-free seasoning blend in place of salt when cooking. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime to add flavor to cooked foods. 11.Package your own healthy snacks. Put cut-up veggies and fruits in portion-sized containers for easy, healthy snacking on the go, without the added sugars and sodium. 12.Cook vegetables in healthy ways that will help bring out their natural flavors, including roasting, grilling, steaming and baking. You’ll need less salt (if any) and may even turn the most anti-veggie kid into a fan! 13.Let our heart be your guide when grocery shopping. Look for foods with the American Heart Association’s trusted Heart-Check mark to make smarter food choices. ing methods that add little or no solid fat, like roasting, grilling, baking or steaming. 17.Schedule time each week to plan healthy meals. Keep your recipes, grocery list and coupons in the same place to make planning and budgeting easier. 18.Serving size does not always equal portion size. Check the serving size and servings per container because what might seem like a typical portion could actually equal two or more servings. 19.Get your kids in the kitchen! They’ll be more excited about eating healthy foods when they’ve been involved. Give them age-appropriate tasks and keep a step-stool handy. 20.Use frozen or canned fish and poultry for a quick and easy meal. Choose the options canned in water and watch sodium content. 21.Try a meatless meal each week. Think vegetable lasagna or a portabella mushroom burger! Vegetables and beans can add protein, fiber, and other nutrients to a meal. 22.Be an advocate for healthier kids! Insist on good food choices at school and childcare centers. Contact public officials and make your voice heard. Find out more at preventobesity.net. 23.Eating healthy on a budget can seem difficult, but it can be done! Many fruits, vegetables and legumes (beans and peas) cost less than $1 per serving. 24.Watch out for added sugars. They add extra calories but no helpful nutrients. Sugar-sweetened beverages and soft drinks are the number one source of added sugars for most of us. 25.Eat the rainbow: A fun and tasty way to make sure your family is eating a good variety of fruits and vegetables is to eat as many different colors as you can each day. Source: http://www.heart.org/ HEARTORG/ 14.Try sparkling water, unsweetened tea or sugar-free beverages instead of sugar-sweetened soda or tea. Add lemon, lime or berries to beverages for extra flavor. 15.Enjoy fruit for dessert most days and limit traditional desserts to special occasions. Try a delicious smoothie, a mixed berry and yogurt parfait, or a baked spiced apple or pear! 16.Instead of frying foods – which can add a lot of extra calories and unhealthy fats– use cook- PAGE 7 On a beautiful March Saturday, Georgetown Visitation Fathers and Daughters transformed the warehouse in a matter of hours. Notice that the surface is cracked like rocks. Take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.
