History of Math Topics
Challenge:
When you select a math topic, you will need to consider the evaluation form I use to grade.
You are required to have specific math content in your formal paper and your presentation.
The prerequisite for the history of math is calculus 1, with at least a grade of C. This means
you have developed quite a bit of mathematical maturity. Most likely, you will encounter
math you have not seen before. Therefore, it is a challenge to think outside the box. Consider carefully the various topics you can choose from on the list.
Your Choices:
When considering the topics, select a second or third choice, because another student may
have selected the one you signed up for. Also, if a topic does not appear on the list that you
would like to do, then we can discuss this and I may approve a topic not on the list.
Order of Presentations:
The topics are numbered. When you give your presentation to the class, the order of
presentations is numerical. If a student is absent on the day that there presentation is to be
made, then their presentation is transferred to the end. However, 50 points of the 500
points are to be deducted, in fairness to the other students. If you are in a documented auto
accident, hospitalization, or serious illness under a doctor’s care, I can give consideration to
the deduction of the 50 points.
List of Topics
Mesopotamia is a poular topic. If you select this topic, you are
required to discuss the Babylonian cuniform base 60 numeral
system and explain how it is used. The topic should include
information on some of the higher mathematics found in the
Yale tablet: Plimpton 322.
In explain base 60, you need to understand
you to convert from decimal system into base
60. You also need to understand, the reverse
process, converting base 60 numerals into our
decimal system.
