THE SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR FOR THE MEETING IS:

IN MEMORIAM

One of the pioneers of modern lung pathology, Dr. S. Donald Greenberg died in Houston, Texas, on May 6, 1999, at age 68. Dr. Greenberg was a native of Beaumont, Texas, and spent most of his training and professional career in Texas. He was a Professor of Pathology,

Otolaryngology and Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine from

1975 until his retirement in 1994 when he became Emeritus Professor until his death. He was author of 236 pre-reviewed articles on lung

Pathology and Cytopathology, 2 books and 15 book chapters. He was principal investigator, co-investigator or consultant on 17 major national grants.

He received numerous honors and awards during his career including 15 for teaching excellence awarded to him by the medical students at Baylor

College of Medicine. He was the first recipient of the Harlan J. Spjut Award from the Housto Society of Clinical Pathologists and the 1998 recipient of the George

Caldwell Distinguished Service Award of the Texas Society of Pathologists. A memorial fund has been set up by his family at the Department of Pathology,

Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas 77030 c/o Ms. Dilzl Mody.

PRACTICAL THORACIC PATHOLOGY:

A MICROSCOPIC STUDY COURSE

COURSE DISCRIPTION

This course is primarily designed to give a review of thoracic pathology with selected radiologic correlations. The course will run for two days and is primarily a microscope laboratory in which each participant will have his or her own microscope to review the slide collection of over 3400 common and uncommon pulmonary and mediastinal cases. Brief lectures will provide an overview of important topics, but most of the time is allotted for review of the

microscopic slides.

This course will be invaluable for pathologists, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and radiologists, including physicians in training.

Dr. Nader T. Okby, fellow in Pulmonary Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and National Cancer Institute won the Pulmonary Pathology Society

Prize for the best presentation by a fellow at the United States and Academy of

Pathology meeting in San Francisco in March, 1998 for his presentation on p27 immunohistochemical expression in non-small cell lung carcinomas

(NSCLC)
