SHRP Educational Research Grants ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE PROGRAM To reinforce SHRP’s commitment to scholarship and education, in support of the school’s mission and objectives, the school will fund a number of educational research projects which will document the effectiveness, efficiency or enrichment of distance education in the health sciences. Grants will be available to greater than 50% faculty with a demonstrated record of conducting this kind of research. THE GRANT REQUEST The school invites grant applications in the general field of educational research which are consistent with the educational and research goals of SHRP. Faculty members who meet the eligibility requirements (see below) may request funds to initiate a research project with the objective of furthering the educational mission of the school in one, or both, of the following categories: 1) Educational effectiveness and efficiency of education methods. Proposals designed to measure the effectiveness of distance learning, to compare strategies and techniques used in distance learning or to expand and enhance the effectiveness of distance learning will be favored. Studies to re-engineer courses to maintain quality and increase productivity, or study academic integrity are encouraged. 2) Educational Enrichment. Proposals designed to study educational innovation will be considered, in areas such as curriculum. Proposals can study the development and delivery of information, the implementation of innovative changes in curricula, creative teaching methods, a new course design, academic integrity, etc. To fulfill the scholarly goals of this program, all projects should include a plan to disseminate the results of the research in an appropriate scholarly/professional publication at the conclusion of the project. AMOUNT OF AWARDS All awards will be for modest amounts meant to facilitate research and in no case will exceed $2,000. Awards in excess of this amount will be considered only with full justification and individual support by the Associate Dean for Research. Funding - Awards for this round of grants will be made on a rolling basis as long as funds remain available. Funds from these awards may not be used for direct salary support for the P.I., but may contribute to the sponsorship of pre or postdoctoral fellows. 1 SHRP Educational Research Grants ELIGIBILITY Research awards will be made to greater than 50% faculty. Less than 50% and adjunct faculty are not eligible. Faculty must present demonstrated ability in conducting this type of research. APPLICATIONS Application Forms, Submission and Deadlines. Application forms and the program timeline, including applicable deadlines, can be obtained from the offices of the Associate Dean for Research, or from the SHRP website at http://shrp.umdnj.edu/research/index.htm Preliminary proposals (no longer than 2 pages) will be submitted first. Those selected for further consideration will be invited to submit a full, detailed proposal including a detailed project budget. Application Review Procedures. All preliminary applications submitted to the Academic Affairs and Research Office will be critically reviewed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the school and the Educational Research Program. Deficient applications or those of insufficient merit or quality will be returned to the authors For those applications which meet the program’s requirements, the faculty applicant will be asked to submit a full research proposal. Full research proposals will be reviewed by the SHRP Committee on Research who will evaluate each proposal. The Committee’s recommendations and the proposals will be forwarded to the Research Committee (chaired by the Office of Research and including the Chair of the Committee on Research and Department Chairs as appropriate) for final review and decision concerning funding. NOTICE OF AWARD Announcements of grant recipients will be made in accordance with the program timeline published at shrp.umdnj.edu/research. GRANT PERIOD The funding period of each grant is one year. EXPENDITURES 1) Salary. Salary may not be requested for the principal investigator or author or other full-time UMDNJ faculty members or staff, but may contribute to the sponsorship of pre- or post-doctoral fellows. 2) Budget Categories. Emphasis should be given to items that specifically support project goals (as opposed to general items such as furniture, office supplies, personal computers, etc.). Travel fund requests will not be considered except in unusual circumstances in which case a specific request and justification must be made. 3) Adherence to Budget. Expenditures of grant funds must adhere to the specific categories and items in the approved grant budget. 4) Equipment. Equipment provided through this funding, although designated for primary use by the grantee, must be made available to faculty and students throughout the School. All equipment purchased through these grants becomes the property of SHRP. 2 SHRP Educational Research Grants REPAYMENT OF UNUSED FUNDS Any portion of grant funds unexpended and not committed at the completion of the project or at the end of the grant period, including any authorized extension thereof, must be returned to SHRP immediately upon preparation of the final financial report. Awarded funds must be returned as soon as it is determined that all or any portion of the funds will not be needed. GRANT CLOSEOUT Within 120 days following the expiration date of each grant, the following items must be furnished to SHRP by the grantee: 1) Final Narrative Report. 2) The written report will give details of activities, conclusions drawn, estimation of the degree to which project goals were achieved, and a statement as to the prospects for publication/presentation of the study results. 3) A copy of manuscript(s) resulting from the grant should be submitted with the final narrative report. 4) Final Financial Report. 5) Submission of results to an appropriate journal PATENT POLICY All research funded by SHRP must be conducted in full compliance with the policy of the University regarding patents, copyrights and materials transfer. Therefore, any research grant is made on the conditions that: The grant will only be used for performing original research as long as the grantee remains an employee or appointee of the University; and Such grantee agrees to comply fully with all the policies of the University and with the conditions of his/her employment or appointment at the University which are in force at the time the grant is made. 3
