Arts and Technology Research and Faculty Development Grant Opportunities Summer 2007 and 2007-2008 Academic Year Introduction In the summer of 2004, Willamette University was awarded a grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to expand and develop an interdisciplinary program in Arts and Technology. Specifically, the grant is designed to encourage collaboration among faculty from disparate fields as researchers, artists, scholars and teachers, to explore ways in which information technology can be integrated into a liberal arts education, and to lead to the establishment of a minor in arts and technology. Courses in the minor are intended to involve students in using technology for creative and artistic expression. A portion of the grant funds are designated to support research and faculty development to allow interested faculty to investigate ways in which information technology affects their fields of interest and to develop innovative uses of technology as a pedagogical tool for encouraging creative activity. These opportunities are open to faculty beyond those intimately involved in the development of the interdisciplinary minor in order to foster a broader discussion and perspective across disciplines on the integration of technology and the arts. Application Process for Awards The Keck Grant Administration Committee invites proposals for faculty research and development projects for Summer 2007 and the 2007-2008 academic year. Proposals for summer activities are due by 5:00 PM on May 15, 2006. Applications maybe be submitted by e-mail to cramerc@willamette.edu or sent via campus mail to Cheryl Cramer in WITS. Proposal Format and Procedures Proposals should provide details sufficient for a colleague from your discipline to evaluate the usefulness and validity of your project. Please provide a brief explanation of any technologies or methodologies that are specific to your field to assist committee members from other disciplines. An application form can be found at the end of this document. Award Categories The Keck grant provides support for three types of activity for faculty interested in the arts and information technology: Professional Enhancement Projects: to expand competence with current technologies or to obtain training in a new area. In this category, funds could be used to attend: Professional Conferences (4 awards per year, up to $1700 per conference) Training Seminars or Workshops (2 awards per year, up to $2000 per seminar) Teaching Enhancement Projects: to support the development and improvement of teaching approaches, techniques and methods that integrate technology and the arts and to explore the application of technology to creative and artistic activities. Proposals are encouraged that emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, the integration of multiple media, applications of technology to facilitate aesthetic expression and the development of courses to support the new minor in arts and technology. Funds may be used to purchase software or hardware that would not otherwise be available. Funded activities are: Summer research grants for faculty to encourage new course development (2 per year, up to $3000) Released time for course development for arts and technology faculty (2 per year, up to $4500 per semester) Research/Scholarship Projects: grants available in the summer of 2006 and the summer of 2007 for students to collaborate with a faculty mentor on creative or research projects in arts and technology. Students should complete the application process outlined in the Student/Faculty Collaborative Research Grants announcement.
