JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE:
Van Driver / Furniture Remover
REPORTS TO:
Head of Retail/Operations Manager

Role:
To effectively support the Hospice’s Charity Shops, Central Sorting & Distribution Service in all
day-to-day activities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. To ensure that donated goods, rubbish & discarded clothing/bric-a-brac stock for recycling is
regularly cleared from the shops and delivered to the Warehouse and deposited neatly in the
appropriate places either for disposal or for sorting.
2. To keep an accurate record of goods being stored each day for the weekly collection by the
recycling company and to ensure that the collection note from the recyclers is correct and given to
the Head of Retail or Warehouse Supervisor immediately after the collection has taken place.
3. To ensure that all items of rubbish including discarded furniture are neatly stored each day in
the appropriate place on the Hospice site and regularly cleared and taken to the Tip/Metal
Merchant etc.
4. To collect donated furniture and deliver it either to the Hospice’s Warehouse or to one of the
shops and to collect sold furniture from the shops and deliver to customers’ homes. The Driver
will also be required to collect clothing, books, bric-a-brac and any other items donated to the
shops.
5. Upon going to collect furniture, the Driver will on occasion be called upon, together with the
Assistant, to decide whether or not an item is acceptable for sale and may have to politely refuse
unsuitable furniture, where it has not been viewed previously. On occasions, where furniture is
unsuitable, they will be asked to dispose of it for the customer at the ‘Tip’ and will be required to
collect the appropriate disposal fee.
6. Schedules of deliveries and collections are organised by the Warehouse Supervisor, but it will
often be necessary to add additional collections or deliveries to the daily schedule and collections
of rubbish and culled stock will also need to be factored in. It will be essential to liaise regularly
with the Retail Office Team.
7. When delivering furniture to the Warehouse it will be necessary to store the goods in an
organised and methodical manner to ensure easy access and effective turn round of goods. When
items are removed to the shops the remaining furniture will constantly need to be re-arranged.

8. To ensure that all items being transported in the van are appropriately secured and wrapped to
prevent damage in transit.
9. To ensure that the Warehouse & adjacent shed and containers are kept clean and swept out
regularly and that the forecourt of the Warehouse is kept free of nails, screws, glass etc.
10. To ensure that the vehicles are washed regularly and kept clean inside and out and that the
oil, water, screen wash, tyres and all lights are regularly checked and to report to Operations
Manager or Warehouse Supervisor, if any faults or damage occur. Also to ensure that a note is
kept of dates when servicing or MOT’s are due. The first aid kit should also be checked and kept
up to date.
11. To keep daily records of mileage, to keep the van fuelled and ensure that receipts are given to
the Warehouse Supervisor each week.
12. To collect any communications from the Shop Managers when calling at the shops and
deliver them to the Head of Retail and deliver any paperwork, stationery, posters or publicity
materials as required to the Shop Managers.
13. To ensure that sufficient stocks of black sacks, recycling sacks, book bags, carrier bags, tissue
paper, empty hanger holders are available to supply the shops and to inform the Retail Office
before stock runs out. To deliver these items to the shops as required.
14. On delivering stocks of furniture to the shops to locate the items for display as required and
directed by the shop manager. On occasions to undertake small tasks in the shops i.e. replacing
light bulbs or light DIY tasks and on occasions to clean, assemble or make small repairs to
furniture in the Warehouse and to assemble furniture in the shops where it has been transported in
pieces.
15. On occasions to deliver or collect furniture from/to the Volunteer Furniture Restorer.
16. From time to time the Driver may be required to help move items for the Hospice or take
discarded items to the ‘Tip’ to assist the Facilities Manager.
Health & Safety:
This role involves heavy lifting and the post holder has responsibility to take reasonable care of
self and others in relation to risk, health and safety and will be required to work within the
appropriate policies and procedures.
