Job Description for Curatorial Fellow Line manager Salary The Curator £12,000 plus accommodation Purpose To support the promotion, understanding, enjoyment and awareness of G F Watts and Mary Seton Watts in the context of the 19th Century through supporting and learning from the Curator of Watts Gallery in promoting the Gallery, its collection, exhibitions and libraries and archives to the public and students. Key Responsibilities: Collections Management Continue the existing programme of digitising the collection and archive on the Adlib database. Assist the Curator in administrating loans to and from the Watts Gallery Liaise with conservators on the conservation of the collection Archive Assist in the development of the archive in liaison with the Curator Oversee the cataloguing and rationalisation of new accessions to the library and archive Work with volunteers on the running of the library and archive Exhibitions Contribute to the exhibition programme at Watts Gallery Curate the Artist-in-Residence exhibition for the Watts Gallery in liaison with the Head of Learning Assist in the staging of future exhibitions including G F Watts Hall of Fame and Dickens and the Artists Curate web exhibitions drawn from the permanent collection Assist the planning of private views Display and Interpretation Contribute to the maintenance of displays at Watts Gallery Prepare text where required for the displays Research and Publications Assist the Curator in the preparation of publications Carry out research directed by the Curator Develop research and write a lecture and/or article on an aspect of G F Watts, Mary Watts, cemetery chapel, pottery and collection. Events Give talks and tours Assist and contribute to the events programme Security and Gallery Be a keyholder to Watts Gallery Be on evening call for one in three weekends Undertake weekend duties Help with managing steward rotas and duties in the Gallery Other Responsibilities Answer enquiries to Watts Gallery Deal with researchers visiting the Watts Gallery Contribute to the training of volunteers Manage curatorial placements and volunteers as required Any other reasonable tasks that might be required SKILLS SKILL ESSENTIAL A degree in a relevant subject, preferably art and or design history, with a demonstrable interest in Victorian art. √ MA in Museums Studies or Victorian Art/Design History √ Two years’ experience as employee or volunteer in a museum, gallery or heritage environment Good knowledge of the history and theory of nineteenth century art, design and visual culture. A strong interest in the Arts & Craft movement and design history. Excellent organisational and planning skills, coupled with the ability to work calmly under pressure and to tight deadlines. √ √ √ Proven experience of events administration and co-ordination ideally within a gallery or museum or within a similar environment. A pro-active approach to the job, a demonstrable ability to use initiative and to work without constant supervision. Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively at all levels, both internally and with external contacts.
