Hong Kong Award for Young People
15 February 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,
HONG KONG AWARD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, SILVER AWARD
I am to explain the procedure for joining the Hong Kong Award for Young People (AYP),
formerly the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The AYP is an excellent CAS activity and
is an internationally recognised award, which is highly valued by universities and employers.
The Award is an exciting challenge, which aims to actively promote the development of young
people through involvement in four major activities. Silver requirements are:




Community Service (30 hours, over a minimum of 6 months)
Physical recreation (15 hours, over minimum of 15 weeks)
Non-physical skill (At least 6 months of activity for those who have completed Bronze,
otherwise 12 months of activity for silver direct entrants)
Expeditions (1 two-day practice expedition, 1 three-day practice expedition and one
three-day qualifying expedition which requires a minimum of 40km)
Perseverance and progress are underlying principles and the Award is not for the faint-hearted.
Activities undertaken during school academic teaching time cannot count, but extra-curricular
activities organised through school (eg. school sports and clubs) can be counted. Completion of
the Award will require considerable involvement in out-of-school activities, particularly for the
Community Service and Expeditions.
The expeditions are traditionally the highlight of AYP. However, students who are not on
track to complete the Award (by falling behind with their community service, physical or
non-physical activity) will not be allowed on the expeditions, since this involves time out of
school. This is explained in the draft schedule attached to the letter.
I would be grateful if parents and students would complete and return the attached consent and
information form. The training is of course free of charge, but the cost of the AYP Expeditions is
$1000, including the registration fee for the Schools Operating Authority, bus hire, campsite fees,
and provision of tents, stoves, maps and compasses. Students are expected to provide their own
personal equipment, including their own rucksack (one that is appropriate for hiking long distances),
sleeping bag and sleeping mat, as well as food for the expeditions.
I cannot overemphasise the importance of a strong pair of boots to protect ankles on rough
ground. Please also note that at times, in suitable places, during the expeditions, the participants
may not be under direct supervision as they may be given opportunities to develop their team spirit
and leadership independently. AYP expeditions, as with all out-of-school trips, has inherent
dangers, such as: snakes, spiders, risk of separation, injury owing to a fall, fatigue owing to cold or
heat. However, the students receive training to deal with the inherent risks.
Students must register for the Award IN PERSON with Mr Hunter.
The AYP is an exciting and enjoyable challenge. It is demanding, but very rewarding and
worthwhile. I hope that your son/daughter makes the most of this opportunity. Please do not
hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.
Yours sincerely
I HUNTER

Appendix S
Parental Consent Form for Out of School Visits and Activities
I consent to my son/daughter________________________ of Form/Class ______________ being
allowed to join educational visits and out of school activities organised by Island School as part of
the HK Award for Young People Programme. I agree to him/her taking part in any or all of the
activities proposed.
I have ensured that my son/daughter understands that it is important for his/her safety and the safety
of the group that he/she obeys any rules and instructions given by the staff in charge and in particular
follows the following Code of Conduct.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Students will be expected to exercise self-discipline, to show courtesy and consideration to staff,
fellow students and members of the public.
Additionally, for parents of secondary school students:
 Smoking, drinking alcohol and the consumption of drugs that are illegal in Hong Kong are
expressly forbidden.
Should my son/daughter break this code of conduct, I agree to support the school’s implementation of
appropriate disciplinary action which may include returning the student home at my expense.
I understand that, whilst the staff in charge of the members of the group will take all reasonable care
for their health and safety, they cannot be held responsible, unless they are found to be negligent, for
any injury, illness, damage or loss suffered by my son/daughter during or arising out of the journey. I
authorise the leader of the trip or any member of the school staff present, to consent to such medical
treatment – including inoculations, surgery, blood transfusions – which, in the opinion of a qualified
medical practitioner, may be necessary for my child in the course of the trip. I, therefore, agree to
indemnify the English Schools Foundation, its employees and agents against all liability for injury
(including death), illness, loss to person or persons or damage of property caused by my son/daughter
unless this can be shown to be due to the negligence of the English Schools Foundation or any of its
employees.
