2014 CLASS INFORMATION
MAY 13th and 14th
9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The 2014 Northeastern NC Craft Workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14 at the Vernon G James
Research and Extension Center, located at 207 Research Station Road, off Highway 32N, in Plymouth, NC. Registration is on a “first
come - first served” basis. Registration fees are nonrefundable, but are transferable.
Registration forms and fees should be mailed to: Faytie Johnston, 621 Alton Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, (phone: 252-3354680) by April 2, 2014. Registration fees defray general cost of workshops, including mileage and lunch for teachers, postage for
mailings, paper supplies, equipment, etc.

Class kit fees cover the cost of supplies used in class and are due after your class has been confirmed by letter.

1.
ARMENIAN NEEDLE LACE: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Students will learn the basic
stitch, simple straight edging, and circles (doilies). Skills required: good eyesight (bring eyeglasses if needed); good use of
hands (some slight disability with hands may be overcome). On day two, students will make doilies.

BASKETRY – “Garlic Basket”: one day class, Tuesday, May 13. In this class students will use round reed to twine a
functional garlic basket. The basket will have a coiled handle for hanging. The approximate size will be 7 to 8 inches tall,
not including handle, and 5 to 6 inches in diameter. Students should have good manual dexterity and good listening skills.
Prior knowledge of basket weaving helpful but not required.

FULL BASKETRY – “Beach Lover’s Shell Basket”: one day class, Wednesday, May 14. In this class you will create a
sculptural basket that incorporates a welk shell as its base. The basket appears to grow from the shell. Natural and dyed reed
will be used. Twining will be the primary basketry technique used. Various colors will be available along with beads for
embellishment. Students should have good manual dexterity and good listening skills. Prior knowledge of basket weaving
helpful but not required.

BASIC STAINED GLASS: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Students will learn safe handling of
glass, cutting, developing and using patterns. Students will use the copper foil method of stained glass construction.
Students will assemble at least two sun catchers.

BONSAI – “Americanised”: two one-day classes, Tuesday, May 13 or Wednesday, May 14. Students will create a clump
style burning bush euonymus planting in a handmade pot. Students will learn how to prepare their pot, trees, and pruning
techniques, as well as how to choose nursery stock, maintenance, and winter care. Some experience with plants is helpful.

DECOY CARVING AND PAINTING: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Students will carve and
paint a northern shoveler decoy, a duck seen frequently in coastal Carolina. Beginners will learn basic decoy carving and
experienced carvers will sharpen skills using knives and rasps, with tupelo wood and acrylic paint. No experience is
required, just be in the mood for some fun learning!

embroidering on a pillowcase.

FLY TYING: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Students will learn how to use fly tying tools, ty
dry and wet flies, and learn to ty top water flies.

GLASS ETCHING: two one-day classes, Tuesday, May 13 or Wednesday, May 14. Students will become familiar with
safety requirements using the creamed base acid etch solution. Students will learn the basics of creating their own design
using masking tape and contact paper as a resist. They will work with run-n-etch stencils, peel and stick stencils, as well as
over-and-over stencils.

JEWELRY – “Copper Washer Bracelet and Matching Earrings”: one day class, Tuesday, May 13. Students will learn
how to use hammers and texture tools to decorate copper washers to make up the components of the bracelet. Then they will
make wire links to connect the washers. After making the toggle clasp the students will make matching earrings using small
washer and wire. When it’s all done they can give both the bracelet and earrings a patina with Liver of Sulfur.

STUDENT SHOULD BRING: round nose pliers; chain nose pliers; side cutters strong enough to cut 14 gauge wire (heavier
than usual), if you have Wubber pliers bring them. If student does not have these tools, they can rent the tools from the
instructor (see kit fee above).
KIT WILL INCLUDE: all different gauges of wire (14/16/20/22) to make bracelet links and earrings, stainless steel wire
earhooks, set of copper washers to make bracelet and earrings, steel wool, sandpaper, use of hammers, texture tools, bench

JEWELRY – “Wire Wrapped Pendant with Handmade Chain and Clasp”: one day class, Wednesday, May 14.
Students will learn to make a wire wrapped pendant using a stone provided by the teacher. Then you will make your own
wire wrapped links to build a chain and then make a clasp and toggle. You can add beads to the chain if you wish.

STUDENT SHOULD BRING: round nose pliers; flat nose pliers; chain nose pliers; side or flush cutters, cutters should be
able to cut 14 or 12 gauge wire, heavy duty cutters or memory wire cutters are needed. If student does not have these tools,
they can rent the tools from the instructor (see kit fee above).

KNITTING – Beginner: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Students will learn to knit and purl,
cast on and cast off and complete a project such as a dish cloth. There will be a question and answer session about yarns and
yarn labels and types and sizes of needles.

FULL NEEDLE FELTING: one day class, Tuesday, May 13. Students will learn basic needle felting – how to embellish
garments, how to make an applique, pin and/or ornament. Students will embellish a tote bag and finish a piece that can be
made into an ornament or pin while working with extremely sharp barbed needles and wool fiber.

PAINTING IN ACRYLIC: two day class, Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14. Each student will complete a scenic
painting on canvas suitable and ready for framing. They will follow long with a step-by-step process, learning general
painting techniques.

FULL PAPER QUILLING: one day class, Tuesday, May 13. Students will learn to make a variety of shapes, including but
not limited to basic circles, squares, hearts, and flowers, which may be used to embellish their own projects at home. In
addition, students will finish a minimum of one snowflake ornament. The class kit will include all tools, supplies, and
instructions necessary to complete a number of projects in class, as well as any additional designs they may desire at home.
