We are seeking to recruit a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to provide general psychiatric services to the Stewartry sector of the region. The postholder will provide psychiatric services to meet the general adult psychiatric needs for the 18-65 age group in the Stewartry area which has a total population in the sector of 14,000 approximately [18-65 age group]. The clinical commitments are such that one session is available to develop a special interest depending on the successful candidate’s areas of interest and the needs of the service. An interest or experience in liaison psychiatry would be advantageous. The postholder will provide psychiatric consultant input to the in-patient beds which are now based in the brand new, state of the art, purpose built Midpark Hospital in Dumfries. The postholder will also offer out-patient clinics within the Stewartry area at various sites and offer support to the primary care services in this sector. In addition, the postholder will provide consultant psychiatric support to the existing fully staffed Community Mental Health Team for the Stewartry sector. The on-call commitment is shared between other general adult psychiatry consultants and consultants in old age psychiatry, learning disability psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. There are specialist psychogeriatric services including specialist memory clinics, specialist learning disability service, specialist drug and alcohol service and a specialist eating disorder service. The hospital is part of the West of Scotland Deanery and carries out FY2 training, General Practitioner Vocational Training and Core Psychiatric Training as well as Higher Psychiatric Training. In addition, medical students from the universities of Edinburgh and Dundee receive psychiatric training here. Property offers exceptionally good value, at very competitive prices THE POST The postholder will work within the Community Mental Health Team for the Stewartry sector – population of 14,000 approximately [18-65 age group]. The postholder will provide general adult psychiatric services to patients between the ages of 18 to 65 from this sector. They will also have Consultant responsibility for the treatment of acute in-patients who originate from this sector, the in-patient ward currently being housed in Ettrick Ward of Midpark Hospital. The postholder will also offer out-patient services with and through the Community Mental Health Team to patients from the Stewartry sector. It is expected that the postholder will provide support to the General Practitioners who work in the Stewartry sector. Additionally one session per week is available for areas of special interest and in particular an interest or experience in liaison psychiatry would be particularly welcomed. The Consultant Psychiatrist appointed will have access to in-patient beds on Ettrick Ward of Midpark Hospital. The number of beds available to the consultant would normally consist of around 1/3rd of the available beds which would roughly be around 6 beds. The new hospital opened in January 2012 and the consultant will have acute in-patient beds in the new building.. Clinical roles of the various acute adult psychiatrists are still in the process of being finalised during this transitional period. There is an intensive care unit in the new build in Balcary Ward. The 3 responsibility for ongoing care of IPCU patients will remain with the sector psychiatrist who will carry out any Mental Health Act work. The consultant will have access to support from the addictions service with its own specialist psychiatrists and a dual diagnosis nursing service attached to the addiction unit. There is access to a rehabilitation service offering both in-patient beds and outpatient and community support and there will be access to a psychiatric day hospital in Dumfries, the Huntingdon Day Hospital, which is under the consultant supervision of one of the consultants with rehabilitation and forensic responsibilities. There is a developing forensic service which will offer support to the Community Mental Health Teams. There is also a specialist eating disorder service, supervised by a specialist consultant, which offers intensive day treatment to seriously ill eating disordered patients and also provides support through the Community Mental Health Team to each sector team. Additionally there is a recently formed Borderline Personality Disorder Service providing assessment and support in the management of this patient group for CMHTs and wards. It is expected that the postholder will work with the Community Mental Health Team, who are the first port of call for all referrals, to provide effective screening and outpatient services. It would also be expected that the postholder will work with colleagues to provide an increasingly community based service and an increasingly multi-disciplinary provision of such a service. DUTIES OF THE POST The postholder will be expected to spend the vast majority of their time providing direct clinical care and the support for direct clinical care for the patients in their sector in the various sites mentioned above. One session is available for the development of a special clinical area depending on the postholder’s skills/interests and the needs of the service. One SPA will be made available to allow the provision of study leave to complete the demands of appraisal and revalidation. Medical student teaching, junior doctor teaching and supervision, general involvement in governance, audit, management and non-patient associated administrative duties will be discussed with the successful candidate and may lead to a modified final job plan depending on the successful candidate’s skills and experience and depending on demands of the service. Midpark Hospital runs an internal teaching programme for all doctors and in particular support groups for the consultant staff to meet appraisal and revalidation issues. ON CALL COMMITMENT The postholder will participate in the current consultants’ on-call Rota which is currently 1:11 [pro rata]. The on-call commitment is shared between other general adult psychiatry consultants and consultants in old age psychiatry, learning disability psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. 4 RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE CONSULTANT Support from a junior doctor will be available to the postholder. There is a rotation of core trainees, GP vocational trainees and FY2s so the nature of the junior doctor support will vary from time to time.
