Short Story Group Presentations-YOU BE THE TEACHER! Directions: Your group will choose a short story from the literature book. After signing up for a short story, you will read the story individually and fill out the graphic organizer. Next, your group will discuss the literary elements and make sure that each group member agrees about the information that will be put on each slide. Use the graphic organizer to plan your presentation and then create a PowerPoint. Each member must present at least one literary element (by asking questions, answering questions, using PowerPoint to present the lesson, etc). We will be going to the computer lab Oct. 3-5 to create the PowerPoint. You will give a 10 minute presentation Oct. 6. You will create a minimum of seven slides: 1. Intro Slide: Title of story, names of group members, class, and period 2. Discuss the plot of the story (brief summary, define major plot points—refer to the story plot chart from your notes. What mood does the reader feel? What tone does the author set? What feelings are created by the conflict and how it is resolved?) 3. Discuss setting (time period, place, costumes, time elapsed over course of story, significance of setting). 4. Discuss and analyze title, opening line, and closing line of story (what can be inferred from title, why are the opening and closing lines particularly significant). 5. Discuss the main character of _____________________. How is she/he characterized (looks, age, activities, character traits, etc.)? 6. Point of view (Is it first –person or third-person? Who is the narrator? Tell why you think this particular point of view was chosen.) 7. Discuss major theme/s in story (What is the message of the story? What is the author saying about society and/or human nature? What attitude does author have about message?) To get a possible “A” complete 2 extra slides (first make sure the first 7 slides are correct): 8. Discuss the imagery (sensory details) in the text (what a writer creates using figurative language; note his/her descriptive details in the setting such as: colors, objects, weather, seasons, use of light or darkness, etc.) 9. Discuss the examples of irony in the story (explain examples, type of irony, and purpose). 10. Discuss the symbolism in the story (what are they, how are they symbolic, author’s purpose in including them as symbols). 11. Quote selection (choose several important quotes from story and discuss/explain their significance; why did you choose them? What insight to the text do the quotes provide?). Rubric: __________ Participation: Contribute to your group by planning for discussion, leading discussion as well as participating when other groups present topics.
