What Can I Do With A Major In… MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE General Information: Over 319,000 Medical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Technicians hold jobs in the US today. Since the development of this career profession in the 1920s, laboratory professionals have played a vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. Medical Technologists perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses. The clinical internship provided in the UCCS Medical Laboratory Science program is in conjunction with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Students are required to attend an eleven week student laboratory in Omaha, Nebraska, and will then return to Colorado Springs for the remaining nine months of clinical training at affiliate hospital laboratories. Degree or Certificate options are available. Career Possibilities: After the completion of the clinical year, students are eligible to take the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification exam as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
