Avon Sci Tech Meeting Friday 5th July 2013 The 19th annual meeting was held at Broadlands Academy. Advanced Bookings were made by 170 people and 155 School Science Technicians registered on the day. The event attracted people from a wide area including Bristol; all Somerset and Gloucestershire authorities; Wiltshire (including 10 from Swindon); , Devon (Plymouth, Torquay coach for 10 , Teignmouth and Exeter) Newport, Cardiff : and one from Lancaster!. Also present was the B&NES Senior Health & Safety advisor and a lecturer from the University of Reading. The conference was opened by the Assistant Principal & Team Leader Science Steve Ferguson. The first presentation was by Claire Lewis from ARKive who showed examples of Wildscreen resources and the help available to schools. Mark Dempsey from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation talked about the Circular Economy and how products are made to be made again. Can it be Magic !!! by Dr. Matt Pritchard was a display of “easy-to-use magic tricks” and the Science behind them . Coffee and lunch time Displays by suppliers , the ASE, the Institute of Chemistry and in the foyer 4 book companies. The afternoon sessions provided 11 practical workshops. - Earth Science ; Datalogging; Blood Testing - forensics; Crafty Chemistry ; Fun Physics ; Hands on Chemistry; Mystery Boxes; Registered Science technician; DNA -electrophoresis; Basic Microscopy; Dragsters – make your own.. Thanks to financial sponsorship from the ASE, the use of Broadlands Academy for the venue, and contributions of the suppliers and presenters, we were able to provide FREE INSET for Science Technicians.
