Excel Spreadsheet Formula Notes GENERAL NOTES: Start the formula with an = sign. The function names, such as SUM and the cell location letters, such as A1 may be in capital or lower case letters. To display and print the formulas instead of the values in a spreadsheet: 1. Click on the Formula tab of the Office Ribbon. 2. Click on the down triangle next to Formula Auditing. 3. Click on Show Formulas. The spreadsheet with formulas instead of values will be shown on the screen and may be printed that way. FORMULA ERRORS: If a formula is typed without beginning with the equal (=), plus (+), or minus (-) sign it will be ordinary text and it will not be recognized as a formula Formula errors generate a message referring to the type of error. TYPE OF FORMULAS: 1. SIMPLE ADDITION OR SUBTRACTION FORMULA: Formula type =cell+cell+cell, examples: =A2+B2+C2 (sum of consecutive columns) =A2+A3+A4 (sum of consecutive rows) =A2+B2-C2 (addition and subtraction in of consecutive columns =A2+E3+H5 (sum of scattered cells, some may be sub-totals) 2.
