I. Title: Learning Designer Division: Professional & Continuing Education (PCE) Location: Abromson Community Education/Glickman Schedule: Full Time (Flexible) Organizational Relationships: Reports to: Director of Online Teaching & Learning Supervises: Student Assistants, Interns, & Part Time Personnel. Coordinates with: University Faculty, Center for Technology Enhanced Learning & Professional & Continuing Education Staff. II. Statement of the Job: The Learning Designer will be an integral part of the University of Southern Maine’s Center for Technology Enhanced Learning team. They will apply knowledge of learning science and instructional design models to assist faculty in designing courses for online and blended delivery. They will collaborate with a team of learning designers, learning support specialists, multimedia specialists, learning technologists, and interface designers to design and develop high quality learning experiences for University of Southern Maine students. The Learning Designer will also design and deliver faculty workshops, and oversee the work of student assistants, interns, and part-time personnel. III. Essential Functions: Ability to advice faculty in-person and virtually on designing high quality online and blended learning experiences. Collaborate closely with staff in the Center for Technology Enhanced Learning and the division of Professional and Continuing Education to design, develop, and support online and blended courses. Prepare instructional resources for students and faculty to support online and blended teaching and learning. Support faculty with the integration of learning technologies in their instruction. Ensure that instructional material is ADA compliant. Design and deliver faculty training and development and provide ad hoc consulting and support to faculty. Review current online courses to identify and suggest revisions. Excellent oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure a high degree of understanding and transparency of the online course design and development process. Remain current with research and trends in learning science, learning design practice, and learning technologies. Perform other related duties as assigned. IV. Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Knowledge and application of learning theories and current educational technologies used in online and blended course design. Ability to work closely and effectively with university faculty to design high quality online and blended courses. Must have a creative and innovative approach to learning design. Ability to recommend use of current learning technologies. Must have good listening, written and oral communication, and problem-solving skills. Experience with best-practices for making learning accessible to students with disabilities. Qualifications Required: Master’s degree in instructional design, learning science or a related field. Experience designing online and blended courses in a higher education context. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills. Project management skills. Preferred: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in instructional design, learning science or related field. Two or more years’ experience working with faculty in a higher education environment to design courses in online and blended formats.
