I. Title: LEARNING DESIGNER, CENTER FOR TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED LEARNING (CTEL) Division: Professional and Continuing Education (PCE) Location: Abromson Community Center/Glickman Library on the Portland Campus Schedule: Full-time, flexible Organizational Relationships: Reports to: Director of Online Teaching and Learning Supervises: Student assistants, interns, and part-time personnel. Coordinates with: University faculty, Center for Technology Enhanced Learning and Professional and Continuing Education staff. II. Statement of the Job The Learning Designer is an integral part of the University of Southern Maine’s (USM) Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (CTEL) team. The Learning Designer applies knowledge of learning science and instructional design models to assist faculty in the design online and blended courses (70%). The Learning Designer provides ad-hoc consultation and support; designs and delivers faculty workshops; and oversees the work of student assistants, interns, and part-time personnel (20%). This position shares in providing Tier II support for Blackboard at USM (10%). This position collaborates with a team of learning designers, learning support specialists, multimedia specialists, learning technologists, and interface designers to design and develop high quality learning experiences for USM students. III. Essential Functions Collaborate with staff in the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning, the Division of Professional and Continuing Education, and other stakeholders at the University to design, develop, and support online and blended courses. Communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure a high degree of understanding and transparency of the online course design process. Design and deliver faculty training and development Provide ad hoc consulting, in-person and virtually, to faculty. Prepare instructional resources for faculty and students to support online and blended teaching and learning. Support faculty with the integration of learning technologies in their instruction. Ensure that instructional material is ADA compliant. Review existing online courses to identify and suggest revisions. Leverage open educational resources. Remain current with research and trends in learning science, learning design practice, and learning technologies. Perform other related duties as assigned. IV. Public and Professional Activities Participate in national conferences and professional development events to keep current with best practices and emerging trends in learning design and learning technology. VIII. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge and application of learning theories and current educational technologies used in online and blended course design. Ability to work effectively with tenured university faculty to design high quality online and blended courses. Must bring a creative and innovative approach to learning design. Must have good listening, written and oral communication, and problem-solving skills. Experience with best-practices for making learning accessible to students with disabilities. Experience with open educational resources. IX. Qualifications Required: Master’s degree in instructional design, learning science, or a related field. Experience designing online and blended courses in a higher education context. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills. Project management skills. Preferred: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in instructional design, learning science, or related field. Two or more years experience working with faculty in a higher education environment to design courses in online and blended formats. Online teaching experience in a higher education environment.
