Innovation Showcase for World Languages December 11, 2013 Statesville High School Welcome to a day of professional sharing of best practices! You will choose 3 different sessions to attend throughout the day. Please go directly to the location of your first session when you arrive. Time Session Title & Description 1: 00-1:50 ● ● ● ● Option 1: “Blended Learning in the World Language Classroom” with Dr. Campbell from Duke University, Patty Magnuson from South High, and students who participated in the program: Participants will learn about the Global Leadership Institute Program which offers cross-cultural opportunities, educational programs, and curricula materials for to educators. (Rm B120.) Option 2: no longer available Option 3: “The Sound System, Technology in the Classroom, & Second Language Strategies” Marcela Nasri, Maria Roldan, Raquel Swierczewski & Melissa Heinrich from Northview IB: This session includes three mini-sessions that all address closing learning gaps. Participants will first learn a strategy for teaching decoding skills to increase pronunciation accuracy that has been successful in a Spanish classroom. Next, presenters will share various ways to engage students in instruction through technology tools and targeted strategies. (Rm.B122) Option 4: “The Layered Curriculum” Presented Virtually by Sherrard Lewis: Participants will learn about differentiated instruction based on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences meshed with Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy to provide every child with an individualized educational plan full of choices, curiosity, and engagement. (Rm. B123) 1:50-2:00 Transition to 2nd session 2:00 – 2:50 ● ● ● Option 1: “Blended Learning and Differentiation” Presented by Brittany Brown & Rosario Garcia of West High: What does it feel like to be a student in a blended learning classroom? Join this interactive session that moves learners through a blended learning activity that focuses on differentiating instruction and meeting learner needs. (Rm.B120) Option 2: “Blended Learning examples in French and Spanish” with Leslie Plyler, Jennifer Husbands, and Alba Lopez from Statesville Middle: Stations will include activities on interpretive communication, verb conjugation and practice, as well as a station for sharing ideas and concerns with blended learning. (Rm. B121) Option 3: “World Language Assessments” with Helen Williams of Lake Norman High: Participants will dig deeper into the NC DPI World Language Assessment Examples and use them to create meaningful, proficiency based assessments that you can use in your classroom. (Rm. B122) 2:50- 3:00 Transition to 3rd session 3:00 – 3:50 ● ● ● 3:50 – 4:00 Option 1: “ACTFL Updates” Presented by Brittany Brown & Rosario Garcia of West High: Participants will get timely updates from the ACTFL national conference. Content of this session will be driven by presentations from the conference. (Rm. B120) Option 2: “SAS Curriculum Pathways” Mitsi Upshaw from South Iredell High School: Participants will be able to register for a free account through SAS Curriculum Pathways. After registering, teachers will be able to create customized lesson plans to use in their Spanish (as well as Social Studies, Math, Science and English) class the next day! (Rm. B121) Option 3: “eBooks and Technology in the World Language Classroom” with Kim Fox & Hannah Lee of North Iredell High: Learn how students can use eBooks and other technology to reflect on learning, and to improve skills. Find out about a method for immediate feedback that cuts down on cheating and individulizes not only instruction, but assessment. (Rm. B122) Feedback
