Sustainability Committee Work group summaries 2008-2009 Feb. 27 2009 Review of Goals and Tasks Following are the projects chosen by the committee to work on for this academic year; 1. Initiative – Improve Recycling Program Goals i. Create a system that identifies where the recycling bins are most efficiently located on campus. ii. Standardize signage for all recycling bins through out the campus. iii.Create report that tracks the tonnage of all the garbage and recycling material produced monthly. Work Group Bob Roehl – Facilitator, Chip Dodd, Emma Baer Progress: Meeting 2/27 to look at signage, Emma has created a report on where & how full bins are, Report that tracks tonnage is not yet done Comments: Due to time constrains on the pick-up person, placing bins in prime locations and getting the established pick-up route sheet filled out and tabulated are still in the works. When the indicator/ carbon footprint report is done we can help to advance this. 2. Initiative – PUB Landscaping and Support Goals New primary goals added: 1. Create Sustainable Plant list with plants, numbers, and other locations for planting 2. Create new educational plants tour with tags, route, brochure, and video/pod cast web link i. Events to encourage donating to this. ii. Plant fund awareness. iii. Donor acknowledgement Work Group Susan Sparks/Chip Dodd – Facilitator, Matt Loper, Yasu Sumino, Bob Roehl Progress: Sustainable Plant list created, 2 funding sources identified- procurement and the plant fund. Discussions on ways to advertise the plant fund are on going New tour is being discussed. Comments: Getting information to the Strategic Planning/ Master plan designers and having input/ conversations on educational use of grounds and promoting sustainable planting are important goals for this work group and for the promotion of sustainability on campus. 3. Initiative – Reduction of Carbon Footprint/Greenhouse Gases Goals i. Transportation Options, communication center, research other Colleges ii. Solar Energy Program iii. Sustainable Purchasing iv. Climate Report Work Group Juliet Anderson – Facilitator, Amy Easton, Tim Payne, Berta Lloyd, Rosie Dixon, Andy Gregory Progress: Discussions with METRO are ongoing, a student fee/ other funding options need to be explored. Transportation information center in PUB being discussed with student council. Permission to gather data annually for a Carbon Footprint report and a basic format for the report have been achieved. AS sustainable purchasing meeting with purchasing would be good in the near future, if this can go forward the work group could give a recommendation for policy action by the end of the year. Comments: A Bus pass supported by a student fee may be the option of choice, recommending the most sustainable and least expensive options for students will remain on the committee’s agenda as any policy moves forward. Carbon footprint and indicator reports are important to our future planning, some process for communicating the data needs to be put into place. 4. Initiative – Sustainability Communication Strategy Goals i. Events Support ii. Explain how this helps students iii. Creating Web Link iv. Become the hub of sustainability information for our campus: Identify the key sustainability items that need communication to college and outside communities. Work Group Jim Hills – Facilitator, Emma Baer, Ritva Manchester, Andy Gregory (secondary work group), Rosie Dixon (secondary work group) Progress: The Website is live, Solar panel information is being put on, Plant and other initiatives are in the process of being communicated. Earthweek is an important event to promote and brochures, newspaper, and other advertising and communication materials will be forth coming. Other Issues not being dealt with formally: Sustainable building & Sustainable academic programs Comments: It is in the interest of the College to put sustainability into RFP’s and expect contractors to live up to the highest in sustainable building and product sourcing practices.
