Dr. Wu-Tien Wu is an emeritus professor of Special Education at National
Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). He was born in Taiwan and completed his
undergraduate and master degree in Taiwan and Ph.D. (in school psychology) from
the University of Kentucky, USA in 1975. He has been the leader for numerous
professional organizations both in Taiwan and abroad. For example, in Taiwan, he
served as presidents for such associations as Special Education, Psychological Testing,
Guidance, Gifted Education, and Teacher Education. Internationally, he served as the
president of the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children (1993-97).
Over the past 30 years of services at the University, he has held many
administrative posts, for example, as director of Special Education Center, founding
chair of Special Education Department, director of Research Center in Educational/
Psychological Measurement, founding director of Graduate Institute of Educational
Policy and Administration, and Dean of College of Education. Besides, he served as
chair of Education Committee at the National Science Council (NSC), R.O.C.
Because of his research and organization achievement, professor Wu has been
the frequent keynote speakers in many international associations/organizations. In
addition, he sits on the editorial board of six international journals and is the associate
editor of Emotional & Behavioral Difficulties. He has received numerous recognitions
and awards for his outstanding achievement, including the distinguished educator of
the year in Taiwan, the NSC’s distinguished research award, the visiting research
fellow of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Marden
visiting fellow of the University of Hong Kong, the advisory professor of East China
Normal University, the fellow of the International Academy of Intercultural Research
(IAIR), the diploma of professional counseling from the International Academy of
Behavior Medicine, Counseling, and Psychotherapy (IABMCP), the outstanding
leadership plaque and distinguished service award from the World Council for Gifted
and Talented Children (WCGTC), and the distinguished alumnus of Taiwan Normal
University.
Professor Wu has published over 30 books and 300 papers and many were in
international journals. His research and service interests centered on the discovery and
development of human potentials, in the areas of special/gifted education and
guidance/counseling, in particular. His recent works focus on special education
policies. For example, he led a group of education scholars, medical doctors,
administrators, and teachers, entrusted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), to
complete a large scale of national prevalence study of children with disabilities in
1992 and resulted in a 6-year promotion plan of special education for the disabled; He
led a research team, under the sponsorship of NSC, to carry out a 5-year research
project (1994-1999) on comprehensive strategies of gifted and talented education and
a 4-year research project (1999-2003) on the development of multiple talents. Most
recently, he led a research group, entrusted by MOE, initiating a national policy study
on teacher education. The final report has been served as a basic guideline for teacher
education reform in Taiwan since it was released in early 2005.
