Barnet Furniture Centre Furniture Reuse Project
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Barnet Furniture Centre (BFC) is looking to recruit a
dynamic full time Assistant Manager to support the Project
Manager with the day to day running of the business. You
will have previously worked in a deputy or management role
ideally within a customer service environment. You will have
some knowledge of book keeping, accountancy and other IT
packages. The successful applicant will become part of a
small friendly team who serve the Borough of Barnet
collecting donated furniture from residents
BFC is a community project and registered charity, those wishing to apply for this post
will need to have an understanding of the charity’s aims and objectives and be keen to
promote the project.

Job Purpose
Following the moral values and ethos of the charity to develop, co-ordinate and
assist in the management of the Centre.
The successful candidate will support the Project Manager to –


take the charity forward providing vision, inspiration and
professionalism of the highest standard
maintain an environment where all employees and volunteers develop
and excel
Main Duties
1.
Ensure the future sustainability of the charity as directed by the Board of
Directors working with the Project Manager












2.
To assist the Project Manager with recruiting, motivating, identifying training
needs and setting targets for a team of dedicated staff and volunteers





3.
Design and promote activities to meet customer demand and
generate revenue for the charity
To manage staff and volunteers on Saturday(s) and be
responsible for opening/closing the centre and the safe handling
of cash takings for the day
Ensure that warehouse and logistics staff display furniture
appropriately, that it is labelled , in good condition to display,
that it complies with trading standards regulations and is priced
up in line with our strategic pricing policy
Have a keen eye for visual merchandising
Monitor health & safety in the warehouse and other areas of the
Centre ensuring that H&S procedures are followed
Advertise and promote the Centre to increase revenue
To record daily sales onto spreadsheets
To record voucher sales onto spreadsheets
High standard of customer service face-to-face or by telephone
Cash or credit card handling
Supporting staff in pressurised situations
To handle customer complaints and follow the complaints
procedure at all times
Supervise, support and develop personnel
Resolve disputes and handle accidents and emergencies in the
absence of the Project Manager
Knowledge of accounting procedures and excel spreadsheets
Control petty cash expenses
Control banking procedures
To ensure compliance with all current and relevant legislation, and company
policies and procedures
 Understand company handbook and ensure policies and
procedures are maintained
 Understand and implement compliance with Trading Standards
Legislation
 Understand and comply with Employment Law
 Understand and comply with Health & Safety Legislation
4.
To monitor and evaluate the activities of the Centre and produce reports as
required by the Project Manager
5.
To work closely with the local community, user groups, statutory agencies and
similar organisations ensuring the needs of the community are met
6.
To ensure the continuing marketing and promotion of the Centre in the
statutory and private sectors as well as the community and voluntary sector
7.
To undertake management duties in the absence of the Project Manager and
any other duties as and when required
Skills and Experience
Essential
 At least two years working in a senior position, including supervision of staff
 A belief in the 3 R's, Reduce, Re-use Recycle, and the local community of Barnet
 Strong leadership skills
 Self-motivated, well organised, able to manage own time and have good
administrative skills
 Experience of delivering a quality service to a diverse range of client groups
 Good business acumen and decision making skills
 A good team player
 Ability to respect confidentiality
 Experience of accurately recording information
 Good communication skills: verbal, written, IT
 Ability to identify, assess and manage risk
 Willingness to work flexibly and undertake work outside normal hours
Desirable
 At least two years’ experience of working in the community and voluntary sector
 Good knowledge of local housing organisations and networks
 Willingness to undergo training
 Full driving licence
 Knowledge of accountancy software
The successful candidate must attend a one day (emergency) first aid course within
the first 3 months of employment
