As one door closes many will be opened! After 6 y ears of using the wonderful Chur ch Farm Youth Centre, the premises are now going to be used for muc h needed extra classrooms for Oak Hill Campus Resourced Provision which shares the same site. So YASS! is in the process of taking advantage of this change as an opportunity to plan new activities at di fferent venues. We have led the way over the last 14 years to introducing off site activities such as Horseridi ng, Wall climbing, China Painting, Canoeing, Chickenshed, Theatre, Ou tings, and many, many m ore that others have followed suit to benefit families a ffected by disability. Added to these are the m ore recent YASS! Family Sunday Afternoons. Our YASS! Cli ck Club was in partner ship with and then we took over the running fro m Barnet NAS. We have worked in partnership and with o thers to deliver many activities such as Trampolining with Tramp olining forAll, Residentials with Fair Play Barnet, Non Cont act Boxing and the onc e in a lifetime trip on a Tall Ship thanks to PODS. We are now working wit h another on fresh, exciting ideas especially for the more a ble who have been affected by the reduced Barnet Short Breaks Servi ce – see item 35. YASS! is one of the very few independen t Providers of activities in Barnet who provided before, during, and will c ontinue after Barnet Short Breaks and their Providers may have stopped deliveri ng to some. But the difference will always foll ow our ethos of creating opportunities for families to mee t in a friendly environment to hopefully build and sustain friendships to share information and pr event isolation. Our only criteri a is there is a person in the family affected by disability and additional n eeds. We are not about d elivering cheap or free activities. Our own organisation’s c riteria is we own all our own Policies and Procedures, and follow all set Guideline s including training, certificates, and qualifica tions. Our organisation belongs to several Umbrella Group s to ensure we keep up to date with everything to safeguard the needs of families. A concise reminder of th e YASS! Statement for the past 14 years is that we provide activities, family support at every level, produce a regular Newsletter and signpost to others, and lobby to fill gaps and for better provision for all families affected by disability and additional needs. England recreational running programme for people of all levels of experience in running to get active and live healthy lifestyles. The programme is managed by England Athletics and delivered by locally trained leaders who have been educated to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. A key focus for England Athletics is to increase the number of wheelchair users and people with a disability to access this programme. As a result, Push! England is being piloted across a number of boroughs in London , with Barnet being one. Participants don’t necessarily need racing wheelchairs, simply their day chairs and are encouraged to come along and get involved in a friendly and social environment. The programme will be introduced at Oakhill Park, East Barnet, EN4 on Wednesdays from 6.30 – 7.30pm. The cost of the programme is absolutely FREE and is delivered by Maggie Govender, and assisted by Steve Harris (both qualified coaches from Barnet & District Athletics Club) as well as by Jared Keely from Saracens. As this is a pilot programme, Push! England will operate over the course of 8 weeks, finishing on Wednesday 26 March, however the Run! programme will continue to operate at Oakhill Park and it is strongly encouraged for participants to continue to attend if they are enjoying the programme. If you’re interested in participating in this programme, please complete the attached registration form and return to the following address: Jared Keely, Urban Athletics Activator, Allianz Park, Greenlands Lane, Hendon, London, NW4 1RL. Participants must register for the programme and it is imperative that registration forms are sent and places agreed before participants attend to ensure adequate planning for coaches and correct provision for the participants. Barnet, like all local authorities, is faced with making some difficult decisions on how best to continue services with reduced r esources, whilst trying to minimise the impact on s ervice users. The demands on the Shor t Break service have grow n rapidly in the past year in the midst of increasing financial pressures, and the local authority needs to e nsure that those children with the highest level of need are able to access some Short Breaks Services. Therefore there will be a reduced level of services from 1 April 2014 and this will be reflected in our offer of services over the upcoming Easter holidays . Following Consultation with parents, carers, providers and service users, Barnet C ouncil is currently in the process of recommissioning Short Bre ak Services and reviewing the access and eligibility criteria. Once this has been a greed parents/carers will be informed. Please note that funding i s no longer available for i ndividual packages of support e.g. swimming lessons, f amily breaks, holiday camps etc. For details of services available see Dire ctory of Short Breaks, and the B arnet Short Breaks Statement on http://www.barnet.gov.u k/info/930300/disabled_children_s_activities/634/disabled_children_s_activities Christine Aldridge, Short Breaks Co-Ordinator, Barn et Children's Service Page 19 of 17 YASS! & pp4danBarnet EmailNewsletter 25/2/14 25/2/14 Service Date /Time 36 Call the Midwife Currently on BBC iplayer Download 37 NICE (National Institute for Care and Excellence) Quality Standards, QS51 Issued: January 2014.
