CommUNITY Barnet News
News from the CEO
Dear Members,
Welcome back! Hope you had a great summer and are refreshed and ready to enter the second half of the
financial year – yes –it’s the time where we start to see whether our budget predictions were accurate, look at
new funding opportunities and start to prepare for the new financial year.
There are a number of notices I would like to bring to you attention of events taking place over the next month:
16 September – Barnet’s Safer Neighbourhood Board are holding their first public meeting at the Peel
Centre. It is a chance for you to meet the members of the new board and find out how they are holding Adrian
Usher our Borough Commander to account.
17 September – CommUNITY Barnet with members of the local voluntary and community sector is holding the
Barnet social isolation networking conference at St. Paul’s Church. Looking at the causes of social isolation,
this packed conference will showcase some of work being delivered by local charities, reveal the new social
isolation toolkit developed by Barnet and Harrow Public Health and end with a session led by Radhika Bynon
from the Young Foundation on how to ensure the sector is commission –ready.
25 September the Metropolitan Police will be launching their ‘Clocks, Locks and Lights’ community day – see
more details below.
Thank you all for your continued hard work and support of CommUNITY Barnet. We look forward to seeing you
all at the oncoming events.
If there are any achievements that you would like to highlight in the CEO spot - please send details

Voluntary and Community Sector Development Partner
Barnet Council is currently tendering for a Voluntary and Community Sector Development
Partner. CommUNITY Barnet is the incumbent contract holder. Mindful of a potential conflict of interest we
have taken the difficult decision that on this occasion we should not be advising interested parties on how to
best complete this tender. We hope you can understand the reason for this decision.
CommUNITY Barnet will of course endeavour to ensure that its proposals do not duplicate existing activity
carried out in the Borough. If successful in the tender, we will continue to liaise and consult with the local
voluntary and community sector to ensure any new proposals do not duplicate existing effective activities.
Volunteer Centre Barnet
Volunteer Centre Barnet, is currently working with Middlesex University and Barnet Council in researching the
state of Volunteering with the Borough. Jia Yuan Foo (a.k.a Reuben) an MBA student at Middlesex University is
helping us with this research would be very grateful if you could please take a few minutes to complete it.
Please do encourage your volunteers to complete the same.
For ORGANISATIONS - http://bit.ly/1oRl8Hg
For Your VOLUNTEERS (past and current) - http://bit.ly/1tWh1ub
Your response will be sent directly to Reuben, who will analyse it and put in a report. The final report will be
shared with the council, Middlesex University and the Volunteer Centre (part of CommUNITY Barnet) The
purpose of this research is to understand the current state of voluntary sector in the borough: how voluntary
organisations manage their volunteers and some of the challenges they are facing, and to hopefully come up
with some possible proposals to improve the sector. Thank you for your help and time.

Member News & Information
Knowsley CVS
One local charity is being investigated by HMRC who claim their day services for disabled adults are not a
welfare service and therefore HMRC claim that because they work with the people in their day services to
help them find jobs, retrain ,volunteer they are not beneficiaries in a welfare model . Based on this
assessment no organisation could provide the government with their own community work
placements.
Has anyone had any experience of any of their voluntary organisations fighting an issue like this? Any words of
wisdom would be helpful for this group regarding precedents.
They have of course engaged a solicitor they can afford. They
are seeking information on any other
cases and what the ‘’ battle’ taught or achieve. Contact Pamela S Ball 0151 489

funding to charities or not-for-profit community organisations to provide physical activity

physical activity has the potential to improve the physical and mental health, reduce all-cause mortality and
improve life expectancy.
They welcome applications from not-for-profit community organisations and community groups with
experience of providing physical activities for older people or from those organisations who would like to do so.
Most grants will be from £250 - £750 although there is scope for larger grants if necessary.
