Hope you had a great summer and are refreshed and ready to enter the second half of the financial year – yes –it’s the time where we start to see whether our budget predictions were accurate, look at new funding opportunities and start to prepare for the new financial year. There are a number of notices I would like to bring to you attention of events taking place over the next month: 16 September – Barnet’s Safer Neighbourhood Board are holding their first public meeting at the Peel Centre. It is a chance for you to meet the members of the new board and find out how they are holding Adrian Usher our Borough Commander to account. 17 September – CommUNITY Barnet with members of the local voluntary and community sector is holding the Barnet social isolation networking conference at St. Paul’s Church. Looking at the causes of social isolation, this packed conference will showcase some of work being delivered by local charities, reveal the new social isolation toolkit developed by Barnet and Harrow Public Health and end with a session led by Radhika Bynon from the Young Foundation on how to ensure the sector is commission –ready. 25 September the Metropolitan Police will be launching their ‘Clocks, Locks and Lights’ community day – see more details below. CommUNITY Barnet is the incumbent contract holder. Mindful of a potential conflict of interest we have taken the difficult decision that on this occasion we should not be advising interested parties on how to best complete this tender. We hope you can understand the reason for this decision. CommUNITY Barnet will of course endeavour to ensure that its proposals do not duplicate existing activity carried out in the Borough. If successful in the tender, we will continue to liaise and consult with the local voluntary and community sector to ensure any new proposals do not duplicate existing effective activities. Volunteer Centre Barnet Volunteer Centre Barnet, is currently working with Middlesex University and Barnet Council in researching the state of Volunteering with the Borough. Jia Yuan Foo (a.k.a Reuben) an MBA student at Middlesex University is helping us with this research would be very grateful if you could please take a few minutes to complete it. Please do encourage your volunteers to complete the same. The final report will be shared with the council, Middlesex University and the Volunteer Centre (part of CommUNITY Barnet) The purpose of this research is to understand the current state of voluntary sector in the borough: how voluntary organisations manage their volunteers and some of the challenges they are facing, and to hopefully come up with some possible proposals to improve the sector. Member News & Information Knowsley CVS One local charity is being investigated by HMRC who claim their day services for disabled adults are not a welfare service and therefore HMRC claim that because they work with the people in their day services to help them find jobs, retrain ,volunteer they are not beneficiaries in a welfare model . Based on this assessment no organisation could provide the government with their own community work placements. Has anyone had any experience of any of their voluntary organisations fighting an issue like this? Any words of wisdom would be helpful for this group regarding precedents. They have of course engaged a solicitor they can afford. They are seeking information on any other cases and what the ‘’ battle’ taught or achieve. Project Mercury - Clocks,Locks and Lights -the message “Do your part, be security smart” On Thursday 25th September 2014, the Metropolitan Police in Barnet will be mounting a community engagement event of unprecedented scale, with support from other branches of the Metropolitan Police, key partners and sponsors. The aims of the day are: 1) To highlight the fantastic work the Metropolitan Police in Barnet has done to make the borough a safer place, and to reduce crime. 2) To engage with the public building relationships and having 100,000 conversations, reaching members of the community who might not otherwise interact with the police. 3) To promote an anti-burglary crime prevention message, through the Clocks, Locks and Lights message, and the tag line “Do your part, be security smart”. Once the mapping is complete funds will be provided to offer a free pilot delivery service throughout London. Tel: 020 7511 9014 eric@c-f-e.org.uk ,www.c-f-e.org.uk London Borough of Barnet - Upcoming Tendering Opportunities Short Breaks for Disabled Children £4,000,000 - 4 Years – Tender publication planned for Sept 2014 Youth Homelessness Supported Accommodation £2,700,000 - 5 years – Tender publication planned for Sept 2014 Please note that Community Barnet does not know any further details of the tender opportunities but merely that it is the councils intention to put the above opportunities out to tender. We understand that every organisation will require different levels of support so we are trying to establish a baseline of need. Therefore we would request that interested parties from the local VCS complete the online survey. Click here. The information obtained by this short survey will be used by Community Barnet to formulate a support plan for the Sector and will not be shared with any third parties without your consent. Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund The Fund has been extended for a further year, and will now be accepting applications until the end of March 2015. The upper grant limit has been increased from £20,000 to £40,000 per calendar year (January to December). This means that applicants can now apply for up to £40,000 per calendar year towards the extra costs they face when standing for election (or being considered for selection) that a non-disabled person would not have to pay. Also, the scope of elections covered by the fund has been extended to include Town and Parish Council elections in England. You can apply by completing the online application form on the Funds website. If you prefer by post, you can download a blank form from the apply page on their website. If you have any questions or wish to request information in an alternative format, please feel free to call 01457 869 714 or email enquiries@access-to-elected-office.org.uk Grant Scheme to Encourage Participation in Physical Activity for Older Adults The shared Barnet and Harrow Public Health Team wish to award small grants for seed funding to charities or not-for-profit community organisations to provide physical activity sessions for older adults in Barnet. Physical inactivity is one of the major risk factors for poor health and death amongst older people. Increasing physical activity has the potential to improve the physical and mental health, reduce all-cause mortality and improve life expectancy. They welcome applications from not-for-profit community organisations and community groups with experience of providing physical activities for older people or from those organisations who would like to do so. Greater London Connection Voucher Scheme Your business could get up to £3k towards installing a high-speed broadband connection, usually of 30Mbit/s or more. With high speed broadband you can store and access files and applications via the cloud, transfer large files quickly and securely, and enjoy a more productive and reliable service every day. The next step is to get a connection voucher. Department for Culture, Media and Sport is making available up to £100 million to SMEs and charities across 22 UK cities. The scheme in the capital is being delivered by the Mayor of London and local boroughs. The voucher can also be used for the installation of a dedicated business grade broadband service. To find out more, visit:www.london.gov.uk/broadband Upcoming Events Tackling Social Isolation For many years now the voluntary sector has worked to reduce social isolation for carers, disabled people, older adults, people with a mental health condition, children and people from marginalised communities - in fact anyone who is likely to call upon the voluntary sector to help. The event will bring together organisations from across all sectors, provide concrete information that can be used to improve the quality of service provision and enable organisations to pool their resources, skills and talents to consider building consortia to bid for funding or simply create innovative ways of working together to meet the needs of your beneficiaries. Register, here Get to Know Cancer Pop-up Kiosk A Get to Know Cancer pop-up kiosk will open at the Broadway Shopping Centre in Edgware on 23 September. If you have any questions or concerns about cancer, please pop in and have a chat with one of the specialist nurses and Cancer Research UK activists who will provide support and advice on the signs and symptoms of cancer. No appointment is needed. Over 1,000 Barnet residents visited a previous pop-up shop at the Spires Shopping Centre in High Barnet. The pop-up shops are part of the Get to Know Cancer campaign by Barnet and Harrow Public Health service, in partnership with NHS England. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis and get the message across that cancer is treatable, even beatable. Would you benefit from a mentor? Leaders Together is a Time Bank Project that matches volunteer senior professional mentors with leaders of community groups and social enterprises to support them on a one-to-one basis. The mentor can assist the groups and their leaders with everything from fundraising and financial management to strategic planning or communications. They are currently looking for leaders in small charities, social enterprises or community groups who need support and advice to drive their group forward! Perhaps you need help with fundraising, marketing, volunteer management or just need a sounding board for your ideas! Requirement is that you are based in Greater London and have an annual turnover of less than £500,000. It’s a free service, designed to build the capacity of groups which need a little extra support, guidance and advice. They will provide an induction for every mentee and are there to help you make the most of the programme!
