What should I do with unwanted household chemical products?
Unwanted or out-of-date household chemical products should be disposed of through Detox your Home
mobile collections – a safe, FREE and easy-to-use service to dispose of common, highly toxic
household chemicals without harming your health or the environment.
What is Detox your Home?
Detox your Home is a safe, free and easy-to-use service to dispose of common household chemicals
without harming your health or the environment.
You can reduce the risk of poisoning, environmental pollution and bushfire hazards and improve
recycling rates by dropping off unwanted chemicals at <location’s> Detox your Home mobile collection.
Do I have to pay to use this service?
No. Detox your Home is a free service for all Victorian householders. It is administered by Sustainability
Victoria in partnership with local councils and is funded by the Victorian landfill levy.
When are Detox your Home mobile collections held?
There are 31 Detox your Home mobile collections held at the same locations across Victoria each year
to ensure reasonable access for all Victorian householders. The next Detox your Home collection near

What products are accepted through Detox your Home?
You can bring as many of the following products as you like, so long as each container is less than 20
litres or 20 kilograms.

Can I dispose of chemicals that I use for my business?
No. Detox your Home only collects household chemicals. Businesses that need to dispose of chemicals
used for commercial or industrial purposes should contact a chemical disposal company – check the
Yellow Pages under ‘waste reduction and disposal services’ – or you can visit businessrecycling.com.au

Can I dispose of paint / batteries / CFLs / fluorescent tubes at the Detox your Home collection?
Detox your Home is a free service designed specifically to collect unwanted or out-of-date household
chemicals. Less toxic items – paint, household batteries, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent
lamps (CFLs) – can be disposed of throughout the year at a permanent drop-off site.
There is an operational Victorian drop-off site that you can access all year round at <closest drop-off
site>, <address>. For some councils, there may be more than one convenient drop-off site location. In
this case, list all of the appropriate sites.

permanent drop-off sites.
Why can’t I drop off paint at the same time as household chemicals?
Residents can drop off paint, household batteries, and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) at permanent
drop-off sites throughout the year. Some sites may also accept gas bottles however there may be a
charge for this service – speak to your local council for more information.
Detox your Home collections, on the other hand, are designed specifically to collect unwanted or out-ofdate household chemicals, which need to be collected and disposed of by a trained team.
Detox your Home collections will be held as close as possible to a permanent drop-off site to make it
easy and convenient for householders to dispose of household chemicals and paint, batteries, CFLs at
the same time.

Who can attend the <location> collection?
Detox your Home household chemical collections are for all Victorian householders. You don’t need to
be a <host council> resident to attend the <location> Detox your Home mobile collection.
I can’t attend the <location> collection. When will another collection be held?
There are 31 Detox your Home collections held across Victoria each year to ensure reasonable access
for all Victorian householders. If you cannot attend the <location> collection this year, another collection
will be held about the same date next year.

I don’t live near <location>. Will there be a Detox your Home collection in my municipality?
There are 31 Detox your Home mobile collections held across Victoria each year however the service is
not based per council anymore. All host councils and neighbouring councils will work together to deliver
the service and ensure that all Victorian householders have reasonable access to the Detox your Home

Will the Detox your Home collection be cancelled if there is bad weather?
The Detox your Home collection will go ahead rain, hail or shine. The collection will only be cancelled if a
Code Red Fire Warning is declared in your area, in which case it will be rescheduled for a later date.
How to use the Detox your Home service
What do householders need to do?
Detox your Home is easy and it’s free. Select your most convenient location, register online or over the
phone, then turn up on the day – and we’ll do the rest.
Please make sure you register before attending the Detox your Home collection. Registration is required
to manage the traffic flow and avoid queues on the day, which means you can get in and out quickly.

Customer Service staff can help residents by talking them through the online registration process over
the phone. A step-by-step guide is provided below. Please encourage residents to use the online
booking system instead of calling the hotline wherever possible.
Step 1
Go to www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxmobile and click ‘register’ on your preferred collection.
Step 2
Click on your preferred time period.
Step 3
Enter your details and click ‘Book’.
Step 4
You will see a confirmation screen and also receive a confirmation email. If you provide your mobile
phone number, you will also receive a SMS confirmation and a SMS reminder 24 hours before the
collection.
How do I bring the chemicals to the collection?
On the day of the collection, carefully pack the chemical products into your car, preferably in the boot,
and bring them to the Detox your Home mobile collection. A trained team will dispose of them safely and
for free.
Tips to safely transport chemicals
 Travel with your car windows open if you have flammable material or chemicals that smell.
 Keep chemicals in their original containers.
 Check lids are on tight.
 Put containers in a plastic tray or bucket so they do not spill.
 Double wrap old containers in plastic bags to prevent leaks.
 Keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons.
 Keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials.
 Pack powders and solids securely.
What do I do if I’m not sure what some of the chemicals are?
Label it as ‘Unknown Chemical’. Do not guess what the chemical might be.

I can’t attend the collection anymore. How do I cancel my booking?
When you booked in to use the Detox your Home mobile collection, you would have received a
confirmation email from Sustainability Victoria. You can cancel your booking by clicking on the
‘Cancelling your booking’ link provided in the email.
If you cannot find the email or you booked over the phone, call 1800 353 233 and a customer service
representative will cancel the booking for you.
I can’t attend in the time slot I have selected. Can I choose another time slot?
When you booked in to use the Detox your Home mobile collection, you would have received a
confirmation email from Sustainability Victoria. You can change your booking by clicking on the
‘Cancelling your booking’ link provided in the email, then booking a new time slot at
www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxmobile
If you cannot find the email or you booked over the phone, call 1800 353 233 and a customer service
representative will change the booking for you.
Why Detox your Home mobile collections are important
Why do we need this service?
Household chemicals can be dangerous. They can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a
house fire, release toxic fumes and damage the environment. Detox your Home mobile collections allow
you to dispose of these potentially hazardous products in a safe and easy manner.
The collected items are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
Why are household chemicals dangerous?
Household chemicals can harm your children and pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic
fumes and damage the environment, which is why it is important to safely dispose of any unwanted or
out-of-date household chemicals you have in your home, shed and garage.
It’s also dangerous to throw chemical products out with your regular rubbish collection. The products
could explode, ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals. And pouring them down the drain will pollute our
waterways, harming animals and vegetation, contaminating our drinking water supply and making rivers
and beaches unsafe for swimming.
While the dangers associated with improper disposal of chemical products can’t always been seen
straight away, these products can pollute the environment and impact the health of future generations,

Why can’t I put household chemicals out with my regular rubbish collection?
Putting household chemicals in your regular rubbish bins is dangerous. The products could explode,
ignite, leak or mix with other chemicals. They could also contaminate recyclable materials, which would
then end up in landfill.
It’s also dangerous to pour chemicals down the drain. The chemicals could pollute our waterways,
harming animals and vegetation, contaminating our drinking water supply and making rivers and
beaches unsafe for swimming.
Why don’t you do a street collection like you do with hard waste?
Chemicals pose a safety hazard if left on the street awaiting collection.
What happens to the chemicals?
They are immediately sorted, placed in sealed drums and transported to a specialist waste treatment
facility. Every effort is made to recycle chemicals or use them for other purposes such as energy
recovery – in fact, at least 90 per cent of the collected materials are recovered. As a last resort, a small
amount of chemicals will be stored in secure landfills, in accordance with EPA Victoria requirements.
