Time to clear out your hazardous waste
The Moonee Valley Transfer Station has recently become a permanent drop-off site for household
paint, batteries and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) as part of Sustainability Victoria’s Household
Chemical Collection Program.
The Transfer Station is now part of a network of permanent drop-off sites, which the Victorian
Government is expanding from 12 sites to up to 30 sites across the state to improve access for all
Victorian householders.
Moonee Valley Mayor, Cr Narelle Sharpe said residents were able to dispose of these goods for free
at the Transfer Station prior to it becoming a permanent drop-off site, as Council paid the price for
disposal.
“Council officers have been working with Sustainability Victoria for a number of months to have the
Transfer Station become a permanent drop off site.
“The Transfer Station is a safe and convenient service that can be accessed throughout the year to
dispose of a whole range of items. Along with paint, batteries and CFLs, we can also recycle metals,
oil, clothing, e-waste and more!
“I encourage everyone to safely dispose of paint and other potentially hazardous products without
harming the environment”, Cr Sharpe said.
Council’s Environmental Sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Shirley Cornish said while the dangers
associated with improper disposal of household paint, batteries and CFLs cannot always be seen
straight away, these products can pollute the environment for future generations, as well as harm
their health.
“It’s important these products are not put into your bins and that paint and chemicals are not poured
down drains.
“You can reduce hazards in your home and protect the environment by disposing of these products
safely and easily throughout the year at the Transfer Station”, Cr Cornish said.
The new permanent drop-off sites will complement the Detox your Home household chemical
collection service, which conducts up to 30 mobile collections across Victoria each year to dispose of
hazardous household chemicals.
The permanent drop-off sites enable Victorian householders to dispose of household paint, batteries
and CFLs throughout the year; these products will no longer be accepted at the Detox your Home
mobile collections.
The Detox your Home mobile collections are also located in close proximity of permanent drop-off
sites so householders can conveniently access both services at the same time.
Visit sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome for a list of existing and planned drop-off sites and
upcoming Detox your Home mobile collections.
Permanent drop-off sites and Detox your Home mobile collections are free services for all Victorian
householders, which are administered by Sustainability Victoria in collaboration with local councils
and are funded by the Victorian landfill levy.
The products collected through both services are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
