Residents preventing pollution by benefitting from the free service to safely dispose of
paint, batteries and compact fluorescent lamps
Residents can help to prevent pollution and benefit from the free, easy-to-use service to safely dispose
of paint, all types of household batteries and compact fluorescent lamp (CFLs) thanks to a growing
number of facilities across Victoria.
The Victorian Government is expanding the network of permanent drop-off sites from 12 to up to 30
sites across the state to improve access for all Victorian householders.
<Organisation/Association> CEO, xx xx, encourages householders to take advantage of the free service
to safely dispose of paint and other potentially hazardous products without harming the health of
humans, animals and the environment.
“The permanent drop-off sites provide householders with a safe and convenient service that can be
accessed throughout the year to dispose of paint, household batteries and CFLs,” xx said.
xx said that while the dangers associated with improper disposal of paint, batteries and CFLs cannot
always be seen straight away; these products can pollute the environment for future generations of
humans and animals, as well as harm their health.
“Paint, batteries and compact fluorescent lamps can harm your children, your pets and the environment.
Please do not pour paint down the drain or put these products out with your regular rubbish collection,”
xx said.
“The good news is you can reduce hazards in your home and protect the environment by disposing of
these products safely and easily throughout the year at any of the permanent drop-off sites.”
The new permanent drop-off sites will complement the Detox your Home household chemical collection
program, which conducts up to 31 mobile collections across Victoria each year to dispose of highly toxic
household chemicals.
The permanent drop-off sites enable Victorian householders to dispose of more commonly used, low
toxicity products - paint, household batteries and CFLs - throughout the year; these products will no
longer be accepted at the Detox your Home mobile collections.
The Detox your Home mobile collections are also located in close proximity of permanent drop-off sites
so householders can conveniently access both services at the same time.
Visit sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome for a list of existing and planned permanent drop-off
sites and upcoming Detox your Home mobile collections.
Permanent drop-off sites and Detox your Home mobile collections are free services for all Victorian
householders, which are administered by Sustainability Victoria in collaboration with local councils and
are funded by the Victorian landfill levy.
The products collected through both services are recycled for recovery and diverted from landfill.
