Media Release for A Christmas Carol. Mike Maran Productions and The Nuffield Theatre, Southampton present A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Adapted for the stage by Mike Maran Told by Mike Maran Music composed by Alison Stephens Performed by Norman Chalmers (concertina) Directed and designed by Patrick Sandford Mike Maran’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol is a pocket pantomime – epic in the scope of it’s imagination and intimate in the scale of its presentation. Mike’s adaptation is a faithfull retelling of Dickens’s classic story. It is Christmas Eve and Scrooge is miserable, lonely and terribly unhappy. He is visited by ghosts who are not frightening. They don’t scare Scrooge into changing his ways. On the contrary, they harness his desire to change and help him to redeem himself. It is a story that plumbs the depth of human wretchedness only to rescue us and uplift our hearts to a place filled with joy. Mike Maran and Ali Stephens were working on this production together at the time of her untimely death in October 2010. Norman Chalmers stepped in to rework the music which she had composed for mandolin and performs her music on concertina so that the show could go ahead as she wished. Following a hugely successful tour during the festive season last year, Mike and Norman are taking A Christmas Carol back on the road this year.
