2451 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Apply chemical treatments in a wool scour Level 3 Credits 3 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in the wool scouring industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to identify the reasons for commonly used chemical treatments, be able to prepare chemicals and equipment safely, carry out tests and adjust process conditions to maintain the required product quality. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 2451 version 6 Page 2 of 3 Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of safe chemical handling and emergency procedures. Performance criteria 1.1 Workplace first aid procedures for chemical accidents are demonstrated according to workplace safety procedures. 1.2 Safety equipment is located and operation of equipment demonstrated. 1.3 Dangers of chemicals used in scouring of wool are described. 1.4 Handling and storage techniques for chemicals used in treatment processes are demonstrated according to workplace practice. 1.5 Accident reporting procedures are described according to workplace and regulatory requirements. Element 2 Set-up and dose scour with chemicals in preparation for treatment. Performance criteria 2.1 Bowl conditions required for process are established according to workplace practice. Range liquor flows, bowl temperatures. 2.2 Chemicals required for treatment are measured and prepared according to work instructions. 2.3 Initial quantities of chemicals are added to scour according to process requirement. Element 3 Sample and test treatment conditions. Performance criteria 3.1 Equipment/chemicals required for test are prepared according to the test method. 3.2 Samples are taken from position in bowl specified in test method. 3.3 Samples are tested according to test method specified for treatment. Performance criteria 4.1 Test results are compared with process tolerances to determine if process conditions are within specified range. 4.2 Chemical additions are adjusted to maintain treatment conditions within the specified range. 4.3 Documentation and reporting procedures are carried out according to workplace practice. Element 5 Carry out ‘end of treatment’ procedures. Performance criteria 5.1 Treatment is discontinued and/or treatment bowls are discharged according to workplace requirement and in keeping with effluent discharge requirements. 5.2 Equipment and chemical containers are cleaned and/or disposed of safely and according to effluent discharge requirements. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
