People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare and use blending and opening equipment to process greasy wool, produce product to the required quality, carry out minor maintenance and maintain records as required. Performance criteria 1.1 Blending process is described in terms of method and reasons for blending prior to scouring. Range reasons – price, colour, length, consistency. Element 2 Prepare wool for blending and opening. Performance criteria 2.1 Wools for processing are assembled according to work instruction. 2.2 Bale labels are checked according to work instruction to ensure correct wool is being used. Element 3 Set-up blending and opening machinery for operation. Performance criteria 3.1 Machine settings are set according to work instructions. 3.2 Mechanical equipment is checked and verified as meeting workplace safety criteria. Range 3.3 guards, safety switches. Start-up sequence for machinery is followed according to machine requirements. Element 4 Monitor blending process. Performance criteria 4.1 Blend components are monitored to ensure component ratio is maintained according to work instructions. 4.2 Product and machinery are monitored during processing and adjustments made according to machine requirements to optimise production and quality. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 2448 version 6 Page 3 of 3 4.3 Machine blockages are cleared when they occur, according to workplace and safety procedures. 4.4 Records are maintained according to workplace practice. Element 5 Clean blending and opening equipment and perform minor maintenance. Performance criteria 5.1 Plant safety procedures are followed when cleaning and maintaining machines. 5.2 Wool is cleared from operating parts of machines and immediate work area to prevent contamination and machine damage. 5.3 Maintenance procedures are carried out according to workplace practice. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
