Course Objectives: To facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the swine industry - its size, complexity and relationship to the economy - and of the breeding, feeding, management and marketing practices of modern production units. The relationships, economic importance and management practices of equine ranching will also be discussed. The acquisition of this knowledge will be encouraged through lectures, laboratory exercises, farm and industry related tours and term assignments. The Topic Review will allow individual students to prepare an essay and an oral presentation on a topic of particular interest to them. Topics are to be chosen from the list provided or by approval of the instructor. All essay topics must be chosen/approved by September 27th. Presentations will be made in class during the last 3 lectures. The Farm Plan Assignment is the main student project that will be prepared by a small group of no more than three people. For a group farm project, each individual will receive the same mark unless a strong case can be made to the contrary.
