The New Chapel Times October 2012 A Newsletter of New Chapel United Methodist Church 5016 Hwy. 49 West - Springfield, Tennessee 37172 Phone: 615-384-3939 Just Thinkin’...About the “Heart” of our Mission Do you realize how many ways we use the word heart? If we mean business, it means we have taken something to heart, or we have our heart in it, or we are speaking from the heart. Such sincerity means that our heart is in the right place. If we admonish someone about a serious matter it means we have had a heart to heart talk. If we are too hard on someone others tell us we need to have a heart. If we are too soft on them we don’t have a heart. If we have goals it means we usually have our hearts set on it, and if in the process of time, reaching that goal becomes unlikely, it means we lose heart. Then, if someone successfully captures our goal we are told, “eat your heart out”. Of course, there is your heart and there is your heart. The heart we superstitiously cross in making a promise is not the heart we wear on our sleeve. There is the heart that beats in the chest; that is, unless a good scare has chased your heart up into your throat or bad news has caused the heart to sink into your stomach. Then there is the heart of our inner being. It is the place where we “will” or “won’t” before we “do” or “don’t”. It might be a divided heart of indecision, or a broken heart of sorrow, or a big heart of generosity. When someone does your heart good, it is this heart. When we find it in our heart to do something good for someone else, it is this heart. Now, if you like, you might want to commit what’s written here to memory. If so, it can be said that you have learned it by heart, which means you’ve really put your heart in to it. If you haven’t put your heart in to it, it can be said that you’ve only learned it by head. I’m grateful for the many ways God has worked and continues to work in the hearts of people here at New Chapel. There is so much good around us and so much potential for more! I want you to know the mission of the Church IS being accomplished here at New Chapel as we seek to authentically worship God, grow spiritually, and serve others in the name of Jesus! For example, through our 10% Fund, which is a tithe of our monthly income set aside for the care of the poor; over $16,000.00 has been distributed by your church leaders over the last 14 months. Additionally, since the inception of our Country Fair some 30 years ago, over $200,000.00 has been raised and given in support of various missions and ministries at New Chapel, in the Springfield community and the world. (These are only a couple of examples). Through bible study, worship, and service to others the mission of the Church is being accomplished and the lives of individuals are being changed as they mature in the faith and grow more fully into the image of Christ. This and more is possible because some have given their hearts to the cause of Christ! The world is watching us – the Church, and is looking and listening for answers. Now, more than ever we the Church must take to heart the living out of our mission in radical ways. We’ve got to be honest and real about loving people in spite of their sin or lifestyle. As a friend of mine says, we’ve got to “live fully and love wastefully”. Why some believers can’t or won’t give their hearts to such a mission is worth thinkin’ about. Doug P.S. To you who have given your hearts to the cause of Christ at New Chapel, I say thank you, and I invite others to join us in our mission! On Sunday October 14th we will welcome Kelvin Penuel from Gideons International who will deliver the day’s sermon and share with us accounts of the great work performed by Gideons around the world! A special offering will be received for the Gideons. 100% of the offering is used in the purchase and distribution of bible. Trunk Or Treat On Sunday, October 28th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. we will partner with Woodland Street United Methodist to hold “Trunk or Treat”! This year it will be held at Woodland Street Church in the Board of Education’s parking lot located across the street from the church. The youth and I have touched upon many topics in the last few weeks including: Creation, trust, prayer and questioning, Christian love, the credibility of the Bible, and what do Christians believe in. Sunday mornings have become a time for teaching, learning, and focusing on a specific topic. I want to go beyond talking about the "typical teenage topics" and get them to think deeper than they ever had, becoming more in tune to God as He speak to them. Sunday nights are more casual, with fellowship and individual spiritual journeys being the focal point. Instead of the time together being about one topic, Sunday nights cover whatever topics the youth are personally facing during that week. At this current moment, I haven't decided what to do for Wednesday nights just yet, but I'm considering a few options and something will be started soon. Thank you so much for welcoming me into your church with the greatest expressions of kindness and love, and also for allowing me to be a part of the lives of your youth.
