CENTENNIAL SCHOOL LIBRARY LIBRARY HOURS: 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Teacher-Librarian Judy Toy is available in Periods 1 and 2; TL Phil Salembier is available in Periods 4 and 5 to help you and your students. We are always keen to discuss projects with you. Library Assistant Sharon Cook is at the circulation desk to help you in Periods 1-5. For a resource-based library assignment in Semester 1 contact: Toy Periods 1 and 2 Salembier Periods 4 and 5 We have 16 PC workstations in the main library with Microsoft Office 2010/13 which are connected to the network and the Internet. Eleven are in the north classroom area and therefore may be inaccessible to walk-in students if there is a booked class using the space. Please call the library local (111) before sending students to the library. PC LAB 115: — 30 workstations available for supervised classes only, booked with library for resourcebased assignments. — Students must be under the direct supervision of a teacher at all times in the lab. If you must step out please locate the TL on duty that block to watch the class for you. Vandalism has been an issue in the lab in past and we wish to eliminate it. — Need a quick research lesson? Ask us for help in navigating the web. We are again accessing the ProQuest eLibrary, Gale and EBSCO databases. Our license lets students and teachers use these incredible databases from any computer — at home or school. Please phone (local 111), email Phil (psalembier@sd43.bc.ca), Judy (jtoy@sd43.bc.ca) or stop in to book with Phil, Judy or Sharon. The library is available to individual students, and is usually available for small groups of six or fewer without scheduling. Scheduled classes have reserved computers, tables and, where possible, teacher-librarian time. Problems can arise when students want these resources, and do not understand that they are not available. Please check on computer and/or teacher-librarian availability before you send a small group. Please plan or discuss your library based assignments with Phil or Judy. The library is our classroom and our input may ensure success. Please accompany your class while they are in the library. We will be here to lower the teacher/pupil class size ratio in Periods 1, 2, 4 and 5. We cannot be expected to supervise/teach your class alone. Please do not assign library-based assignments to coincide with planned absences. TOCs or colleagues cannot give the help and motivation that your active participation provides. Students often get the impression that it’s not important if you are not here. Plan and schedule major assignments early. Library assignments are not very successful when several other classes are using the same resources. Consider the early part of the semester when it is less busy. Red tape The library aims to provide the resources and services you and your students need. If our procedures impede this goal, discuss them with us. Collection Development We are constantly looking for new learning resources. What areas of the collection need strengthening? Do you have specific titles that the library should purchase? What subject areas need updating? What content areas of the curriculum would you like to present using library materials? We order new resources on a monthly basis. Our budget has been cut this year, so the earlier requests are made the more likely they are to be fulfilled. SUPERVISION More than 600 students use the library each day. We know how busy you are — but please consider spending a few minutes each week in the library to model library use (and see what is here to help you teach). Students are impressed when they see teachers, administrators and support staff working, reading, or doing research in the library. We like to see you too! We appreciate it when you talk to your students about library protocol and the problems created for others when inconsiderate or uninformed students use the library as a lounge. Also, please remind students that scheduled classes have first priority for the resources. When we are really full students not in a class may be asked to find another place to work on their homework. Documenting Your Research and Works Consulted Frames For Gathering Source Data Copies are available in the library. Please consider using the Centennial Library format for documenting sources. We are happy to teach a lesson with you. Our neighbour — Coquitlam Public Library We are very lucky to have a public library next door, and we co-operate but we are different. Students often are surprised that resources needed to complete school assignments are more available in our smaller library. This is no accident. Our school library fills a different role. Our collection (print, digital and online) is built to support the curriculum. Teacherlibrarians are trained to work with students. Is there a place where Centennial Library Expectations (printed on the next page) can be posted in your classroom? THE LIBRARY IS A QUIET PLACE TO STUDY, LEARN AND EXPLORE IDEAS ASK FOR HELP — It’s a big library with many resources. ALWAYS CONSIDER HOW YOUR ACTIONS AFFECT OTHERS. SOCIALIZE WITH FRIENDS IN THE COURTYARD, CAFETERIA, OTHER MEETING PLACES IN THE SCHOOL, OR OUTSIDE. The study carrel area is a NO TALKING ZONE. The rest of the library is for QUIET STUDY OR READING. TAKE CARE OF LIBRARY MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT NO FOOD OR DRINKS CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF Comply with the INTERNET CONTRACT. — No games — No chat, forums or instant messaging — Searches must be related to school assignments (Talk to a teacher-librarian if there are special circumstances.) SIGN OUT ALL MATERIALS AND RETURN THEM PROMPTLY. There are no fines, but additional items may not be borrowed until overdues are returned. No yearbook if you have overdues in June. Removing materials from the library without signing them out is stealing. Thieves are severely disciplined.
