Program Goal:
This educational activity is specifically designed to assist the registered nurse in learning and
gaining experience in caring for mother and baby throughout pregnancy, birth, and post-partum.
Upon completion of this activity you will be able to:
Day 1
1. Describe changes in the maternal system related to pregnancy.
2. Describe the nursing management of the laboring patient.
3. Recognize baseline, reassuring, and non-reassuring fetal heart rate patterns and intervene, as
appropriate, to assure fetal well-being.

List five OB Emergencies.
Identify three methods of antepartum surveillance.
Identify the characteristics of mild pre-eclampsia, severe pre-eclampsia, and eclampsia.
Provide nursing care and education to the patient in pre-term labor.
Review the pathophysiology of diabetes in pregnancy.
Review the care of the woman with diabetes during intrapartum and postpartum.
Day 3
1. Describe the nursing assessment and management of the postpartum patient.
2. Identify six major considerations when stabilizing an infant for transport and provide appropriate
interventions to optimally prepare an infant for transport.
3. Describe nursing assessment and care of the newborn.
4. Identify strategies to assist the family who has experienced an infant loss.

education by CNE-Net, the education division of the North Dakota Nurses Association, an accredited
approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
